Connected Vehicles: The Future of Automotive

Well, we still have roads, but we are most definitely in the future!

The automotive industry has been moving gradually from physical to digital, digital to connected, and, soon enough, will move from connected to intelligent – to the point where cars will drive autonomously.

We are seeing a rapid growth in online connected services, such as paying for parking, getting a taxi or sharing a ride. And with new services popping up every day, cities are on their way to becoming     “smart cities” that can monitor, for example, traffic congestion.

There are also new services supporting big fleet operators to better manage their vehicles, allowing the supply chain to become more efficient.

New business models are established, allowing traditional automotive companies to tap into new revenue streams. It is clear the whole automotive industry is undergoing a transformation - all the big automotive OEM’s are transforming from a manufacturing focus towards becoming mobility service providers.



Roland Berger predicts that by 2020, 50% of vehicles on the road will be connected, while McKinsey believes this market could grow to $US 1.5 trillion by 2030.

A few years ago, we had an idea where the future was heading, and started working here at SAP Labs Israel on some connected vehicle products:

  1. SAP Connected Parking, a cloud-based Software as a Service (SaaS) powered by SAP Cloud Platform, which offers parking providers a digital backbone to consolidate parking space availability across locations, reserve parking spaces, and improve use, visibility and efficiency. SAP Connected Parking provides real-time access to all revenue data from a browser, while eliminating a costly and hard-to-maintain on premise infrastructure, thus offering a simple and convenient solution for managing parking locations.

  2. SAP Vehicles Network, also powered by SAP Cloud Platform, which helps mobility-focused companies making seamless and delightful in-car experiences a reality. This worldwide network instantly connects buyers (such as OEMs and mobility app providers) with sellers (such as gas stations and parking chains). The network empowers drivers to find and navigate to the closest gas station or parking spot, authorize payments electronically, activate gas pumps, and open parking gates – to name just a few possibilities.


 



 

Working with American and European customers and partners such as Hertz, Mojio, Tantalum, Parken, Concur, Park Whiz and Parking Panda, SAP is creating a business network for mobility services and allowing customers to introduce new applications.
