Time for a quick blog post to draw attention to a very cool project SAP and Autogrid are pursuing here in the COIL Lab this year.

Rather than write about it, I would encourage you all to check out my "EarlyView" podcast to hear firsthand about the project from a couple of the project leads.

In essence, this project is all about SAP for utilities working more seemelessly with AutoGrid ability to providing a scaleable Demand response Operations management solution to the utilities industry.

Today it is not so easy to safely and economically store energy and yet the reality faced is that energy is consumed as its generated. When demand spikes, it means energy and utility companies having the ability to quickly react by generating more energy on demand, hence investing in buffer infrastructure not only requiring significant capital expenditure to deploy but there is high cost to manage this as something that when demand lapses, is simply a sunk cost that does not continually serve revenue generation.

From the podcast learn just how a utility company  can look to offset the costs associated with adding expensive supply capacity.

This project is all about IT innovation software to help utility companies to coordinate energy consumption behavior of consumers at the same time to reduce energy consumption in a scalable and sustainable manner from enabling effective demand response programs. In the days to come leading up to SAP TechEd we plan to produce a whitepaper and demo which will be made available from coil.sap.com.
