Not surprisingly, SAP had a significant presence at the “IOT Solutions World Congress” industry event held in Barcelona late last month which was party to 8000+ visitors from over 70 countries, ~170 exhibiting companies, ~160 top industry speakers and a number of impressive testbeds.

Prior to that, on 28th September, SAP further strengthened its position in the IoT market by announcing investment plans of €2 billion over five years to help business and government entities benefit from the proliferation of sensors, smart devices and Big Data that is rapidly transforming business with the Internet of Things (IoT). Part of this investment plan will be related to acquisitions, of which two have already been announced – PLAT.ONE (www.plat.one) and Fedem Technology (www.fedem.com).

other stands at the “IOT Solutions World Congress”.

The SAP OEM partner channel was at the event in full force with over 40 representatives attending. OEM has become even more relevant in today’s rapidly changing world and this is certainly the case where companies are looking to develop and monetise IoT-related solutions. In this scenario an OEM relationship with SAP empowers companies to fast-track their development and therefore decrease time to market by harnessing SAP’s industry-leading HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) and associated IoT capabilities as the core platform that their solution is developed upon (http://hcp.sap.com/capabilities/iot.html). SAP also offers a number of pre-built IoT applications through the OEM channel that have been developed on HCP, for example SAP Vehicle Insights, SAP Connected Parking, SAP Connected Health Platform, and more – such IoT applications are being released and added to the portfolio on a regular basis.

Siemens partner with SAP to Develop and Offer “MindSphere” to their Industrial Customers

A particularly relevant example to mention is Siemens where they have signed an OEM commercial agreement with SAP that has enabled them to use SAP’s HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) as the backbone to their “MindSphere” offering — the market leading IoT Platform for their industrial customers is also known as Cloud for Industry.

Siemens has built Cloud for Industry, powered by SAP HANA Cloud Platform, as an open cloud platform for analysing large datasets in the industry. It is intended to simplify industrial customers’ ability to create additional value from the Internet of Things to help boost their own production as well as product and service offerings. By connecting industrial assets to the Siemens Cloud for Industry, customers will be able to proactively monitor and optimize their service processes and to generate new revenue streams by selling services instead of products. Siemens plans to create an open IT ecosystem for OEMs and application developers based on SAP HANA Cloud platform.“The SAP and Siemens relationship is expected to help enable the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 for industrial customers. The introduction of the new Siemens Cloud for Industry powered by SAP HANA aims to provide a significant contribution towards the digitalization of the production space. Powerful services for analyzing data from industry are an important part of our digital enterprise strategy.

It goes without saying that Siemens is a huge company and global leader in their industry, however the OEM opportunity is very much applicable to companies of all shapes, sizes, and industries and SAP’s existing partners are very much spread across all of these. Many OEM partners are in fact small to medium sized Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), however we have been seeing greater interest from a lot of large global brands looking to capitalise on IoT and Industry 4.0 by providing new products and services to customers and generating completely new streams of revenue.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is creating new opportunities in every industry. From the shop floor to the shelf in the store, companies are innovating with IoT solutions to gain efficiency, generate new revenue streams, and get closer to the customer. Introducing IoT can bring a business to life. People, processes, and assets become connected and begin to work as one. Data turns into actionable insight that can be used to improve everything from preventative maintenance to the customer experience. That being said, adding IoT solutions can also be quite disruptive to the status quo. It’s important to harness the Big Data generated from IoT. As sensors are added to everything, companies need a strong digital framework and platform that can scale and adapt to the new business processes and models created – that’s where SAP technology really comes into its own.
