The Modellierung ‘24 conference took place in March, at the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) in Potsdam. Our colleagues from SAP Signavio Product & Engineering were there, to gather impressions on the future of modeling, as well as to present own perspectives.

Modellierung is a long-running conference that has been organized by the German Computer Science Society (Gesellschaft für Informatik) for more than 20 years. In SAP Signavio’s product suite, the creation and management of process models plays a vital role. Given that Signavio originated from Prof. Mathias Weske's chair at the HPI and ultimately resulted in its remarkable unicorn acquisition by SAP, we were thrilled to be part of the Modellierung event. It allowed us to reconnect with the origins of SAP Signavio and envision the future of process modeling.

One of the highlights of the event was the keynote by Stefanie Rinderle-Ma, Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), on Model-driven Design and Automation of Process Orchestrations in Manufacturing. As part of her keynote, Stefanie discussed the joint SAP/TUM project on conversational process modeling, which contributes to SAP Signavio’s foundations for generative artificial intelligence-enabled process modeling.

Obviously, it is crucial for SAP Signavio to also contribute directly to the discourse at the intersection of science and software/product engineering. David Eickhoff, Senior Manager for Process Intelligence, presented our vision on the integration of declarative and imperative process models that is vital for fusing data-driven and knowledge-based business process management approaches in the age of generative artificial intelligence. We were pleased to learn that our vision of Large Process Models resonates with the academic community, as evidenced by a talk/paper by Peter Fettke, Professor at Saarland University and Director at the German Institute of Artificial Intelligence, about Theoretical Foundations of Large Process Models.

In conclusion, we returned from the Modellierung conference with a wealth of inspiration for innovative ideas, concepts, prototypes that will feed our innovation pipelines and ultimately be turned into novel capabilities for business process modeling and management software.

For all researchers interested in learning more or brainstorming ideas on the latest advancements in the BPM community, join us at the Business Process Management Conference from the 1st to the 6th of September in Kraków, Poland, and at the International Conference on Process Mining from the 14th to the 18th of October in Copenhagen, Denmark. We’ll be happy to welcome you there for more enriching discussions.
