Hello everyone,
I am writing this blog as a participant in the Data Geek III challenge. In this blog, I am going to analyze road accidents in India.
Allegiance
I have chosen HOUSE OF SPIRITS for this story.
Why did I choose this house ? Because I do care for my countrymen  . After analyzing the data, hopefully I can derive certain facts that can help us to understand why our country is considered amongst the most traffic accident-prone countries(those who do not believe me can check this page in Wikipedia), which areas need more attention from our ministry of transports, who are mainly the victim of road accidents and what are the top reasons for road accidents and probably some ways to avoid them.
Source of Data
I have collected this data as MS Excel worksheets from http://www.data.gov.in.
Technical Details
I have used SAP Lumira 1.17.1 build 1098 for this analysis.
Analysis
Let me start the analysis. The very first question in my mind is how large actually is the number of accidents in India every year ?
The above trend shows that every year more than 4 lac road accidents happen in India which is indeed a high figure.
Also, we can see that :
In 2012, nearly 5 lac accidents occurred in India. But, can all these accidents be considered as fatal ? Let's see:
Thus, 25% of total accidents in 2012 are considered as fatal.
Now, let me analyze the casualties:
From the above trends we can see number of people dying in road accidents is growing over years. Our ministry of transports need to take necessary actions mainly in the rural areas of the country.
Now, let me see the trend of accidents in highways.
Above analysis shows accidents and casualties are more in national highways than state highways. Hence, we should be extra careful while driving on national highways.
Now, next question can be which are the states in India that are most accident-prone ?
Above analysis shows, Maharastra and Tamilnadu need attention from ministry of transports as number of road accidents have been fairly high in those states in last three years.
Now, let me figure out what are mainly the reason of road accidents.
Above pie chart shows, in 2012, most of the accidents(78.7%) took place because of fault of drivers.
Who are mainly the victims of road accidents ?
We can see, mostly people driving two-wheelers have died in road accidents in 2012.
To summarize the analysis,
So, be extra careful while driving in national highways. If you are riding a two-wheeler, remember that you are not a part of a movie, so always wear helmet and avoid doing stunts on bike. Most importantly, obey traffic rules and never drink and drive.
Story
Now, time to create story with help of above visualizations.
