Scenario: To understand how the consumption of Sales Order is against Plan Independent Requirements in the weekly bucket (2 weeks).

Solution: Use the right Period Indicator in the MRP 3 view per actual planning and suitable Consumption Mode.

Check out the SAP note https://me.sap.com/notes/3389505/E for the implications of not setting the right period indicator in the Material Master vs Plan Independent Requirement.

Steps:

Use Case: The business user maintains the forecast in the weekly bucket and only wants to consume the backward forecast quantity.

1. Calculate the suitable number of days for consumption mode.

Before that, let’s understand first how the requirement date is captured for the PIR that is maintained differently according to the period indicator. This will impact how the consumption is selected.

If the maintenance of PIR is Monthly, the requirement date used for calculation in MD04 is the First Day of the Month.

If the maintenance of PIR is Weekly, the requirement date used for calculation in MD04 is the First Day of the Week.

If the maintenance of PIR is Daily, the requirement date used for calculation is the Day itself.

Backward: Worst case scenario, we need to consider the 1st and last day of the week. The below example is used in Week 12 backward. Recommended days = 14 days.

Forward: Worst case scenario, we need to consider the 1st and last day of the week. The below example is used in Week 10 onward. Recommended days = 10 days.

2. MM01 – Extend MRP View 3.

  • Consumption mode = 1 (Backward consumption only)
  • Backward Consumption Period = 14 days

3. MD61 – Create PIR in the weekly bucket.

4. VA01 – Create Sales Order.

5. MD04 – Check Stock/Requirement List. The initial screen is hard to understand how the consumption is being used. Click the User Settings > Period Totals > Period Totals Display > Weeks.

Now, you can see clearly how the PIR is being consumed against the requirements.

6. Now, let’s compare each consumption mode for the same PIR and SO quantity.

6A: Consumption mode = 1 (Backward consumption only = 14 days).

In between W09 to W12, PIR consumption happens. Click Total Requirement Display to see details.

All PIR W12, W11, and W10 are consumed and for the remaining balance of 10, the system will propose a plan order accordingly to fulfill SO requirements.

6B: Consumption mode = 2 (Backward = 14 days / forward consumption = 10 days).

In between W09 to W13, PIR consumption happens. Click Total Requirement Display to see details.

All PIR W12, W11, W10, and W13 are consumed.

6C: Consumption mode = 3 (Forward consumption only = 10 days)

In between W12 to W16, PIR consumption happens. Click Total Requirement Display to see details.

All PIR W12, W13, W14, and W15 are consumed and for the remaining balance of 10, the system will propose a plan order accordingly to fulfill SO requirements.

6D: Consumption mode = 4 (Forward/backward consumption)

In between W12 to W16, PIR consumption happens. Click Total Requirement Display to see details.
