Augmented Reality and Wearable Augmented Reality Apps are still an emerging market, but they’re continuing to penetrate many sectors beyond tech. While Google Glass has been getting a lot of media attention, there are actually many more pioneering Wearables and Augmented Reality apps that are changing the way companies (and entire industries) do Aubusiness.

Ikea, for example, launched an Augmented Reality catalogue app (http://www.engadget.com/2013/08/06/ikeas-2014-catalog-app-augmented-reality/) that lets you arrange virtual furniture in your living room and Augmented Reality apps for education (http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/augmented-reality-apps-for-education/) are already exploding. SAP is busy zoning in on this ground-breaking trend by creating Augmented Reality apps that are set to revolutionise the way manufacturing, robotics and logistics clients will do business.

Introducing our upcoming Augmented Reality apps

In September 2014, we announced (http://www.news-sap.com/sap-showcase-new-augmented-reality-apps-super-mobility-week-powered-ctia/) two forthcoming Augmented Reality apps, namely the SAP AR Warehouse Picker mobile app and the SAP AR Service Technician mobile app, at the Super Mobility Week in Las Vegas. While many Wearables are more novelty items than practical, we’ve focused our attention on creating apps that will help simplify and improve work processes and user experiences by offering a hands-free working experience.

Rick Costanzo, executive vice president and general manager of Global Mobility Solutions, SAP, says that the envisioned potential and use cases for the two apps expand far beyond consumer applications.

“These planned augmented reality apps from SAP are aimed at creating efficiencies for organisations across various lines of businesses by enabling real-time access to data for field workers and service technicians,” says Costanzo.

Many businesses in Africa are focusing on mobile applications for field technicians and warehouse workers, but the Augmented Reality apps from SAP will take this one step further, giving wearers the ability to locate a switching room in the basement of a sports stadium by obeying audible comments, for example (which is seen in this video about the app).

With African businesses – especially in the telecommunications, IT and data warehousing industries that often work far from headquarters, clients and colleagues, this type of functionality can give workers access to the information they need, when they need.
