Dear all,

the German Cancer Research Center's department for medical and Biological Informatics has developed an advanced image processing app that in future may help surgeons to navigate during endoscopies. We (our solutions and development team) have been invited to come to their institution some weeks ago to discuss ways how to best integrate such capabilities to SAP EMR Unwired extending our own image capabilities.

Using body scans available as DICOM objects and markers on the body surface the app is able to reconstruct a realistic 3D visualization together with a live overlay taken from the device camera. Look at this example:

If you want to see this technology in a more realistic setting you can also have a look at a surgery - but sensitive people may want to watch this only after lunch...

The main reason why I share this is because I believe that our approach with SAP EMR Unwired has the power to transform healthcare by providing an enterprise-grade platform that can help find research results its way into clinical reality more quickly. Due to the openness of our architecture we could integrate such capabilities into SAP EMR Unwired rather easy for mutual benefit. SAP EMR Unwired could provide the "right" patient context and the foundation, whereas innovators like the German Cancer Research Center plug-in their core competence without having to take care about the rest.

From an end-user perspective this could be an example for a new area of healthcare IT. This new area I believe will be much more user-driven, creating ecosystems of innovation that put the right information into the center using smart mobile devices as the platform to deliver IT so that people can change the way they work. Exciting perspectives, don't you think?

Best regards

Claudius
