The Shell Aviation entry stood out among hundreds of entries, as one of the most compelling examples of industry innovation and the use of SAP solutions to provide significant business value and a distinct competitive advantage.

Shell Aviation re-imagines aircraft refueling around the world
As one of the commercial businesses of the overall Shell group, Shell Aviation provides fuel services to airline customers at 900airports around the world. They fuel over 2 million aircrafts in a year - an aircraft every 14 seconds in environmental conditions that range from 45°C to -45°C. They wanted to improve the turnaround time it takes to refuel an airplane, thereby improving their operational efficiency and enhancing the customer, and employee, experience.
In collaboration with SAP, leveraging Design Thinking, Shell Aviation developed a mobile, cloud-based application, that replaced a paper-based system, to digitally connect flight operators, airliners, and vehicles, and orchestrate refueling operations - based on SAP Cloud Platform connected to SAP ERP. With this approach, Shell reduced the time needed for a typical refueling transaction from 48 minutes to 36 minutes, resulting in savings of greater than 4 million hours per year and better price risk management. It also resulted in improved employee experience on the front-line staff, as well as improved customer satisfaction through faster turnaround of airplanes - where every second counts. Equally important, Shell Aviation now has a business platform for future innovations by harnessing new technologies such as machine learning and IoT.
