Below is a step-by-step methodology guide to upgrade Windows and MSSQL for your SAP system while ensuring that data is not lost. Note that this process may vary based on your specific system configuration and setup. Always ensure you have a rollback plan and a full backup before proceeding:

  1. Perform Full Backup

  2. Upgrade to Windows Server 2022:

    • Insert the Windows Server 2022 disk into your computer, or mount the ISO, and then double-click setup.exe.
    • On the Windows Server 2022 page, select 'Install now'.
    • On the Applicable notices and license terms page, select 'Accept the terms', and then select 'Next'.
    • On the 'Which type of installation do you want?' page, select 'Upgrade: Install Windows and keep files, settings, and applications'.

Note: Ensure to choose the right edition while upgrading.

  1. Post OS Upgrade:

    • After Successful upgrade to Windows Server 2022, verify everything is functioning properly.
    • confirm SAP application and database services are running without any issue.
    • Reboot and run a system integrity check.
  2. Upgrade SQL Server 2016 to 2019:

    • Run the SQL Server 2019 setup.
    • On the SQL Server Installation Center, select 'Installation'.
    • Then select 'Upgrade from a previous version of SQL Server'.
    • Follow the prompts to upgrade, making sure to specify the correct instance to upgrade.
  3. Post SQL Upgrade

    • After upgrading, confirm the SQL Server version.
    • Check for any errors in SQL Server error logs.
    • Test database connectivity and run SAP transactions to ensure accurate operation.
  4. Post Both Upgrades:

    • Start the SAP system and check that all the services are up and running.
    • ensure all functionality is working correctly.

Hi SAP Support,

Thanks for your valuable information,

You have to add one more step either before or after a full backup, Check the current SAP system to support the latest Windows OS and MS SQL DB.
