Does BTP ABAP Environment (Trail) is equivalent to cloud version of ABAP platform?

Hi,

All the while I'm working in SAP ERP platform and currently picking up S4HANA ABAP skills due to the upcoming S4HANA project at our place. As part of the learning, currently I'm doing the Core ABAP Skills learning from learning.sap.com. It was mainly following the cloud ABAP skills. So I took the SAP BTP Trail and activated ABAP platform(ABAP Service instance). Afterwards I'm able to login from Eclipse and continue my learning which is going very well.

Here I've very stupid doubt. Using that SAP BTP ABAP Platform trail, I'm able to create all the global data objects, new technology stuff like RAP, CDS views etc. Does BTP ABAP Platform is equal to on-premise ABAP platform which is integrated with HANA database? OfCourse, ABAP language version is restricted for BTP ABAP.

Next doubt is, SAP BTP ABAP Platform trail doesn't have any application logic right like Sales , Finance applications like we have in ERP? That will come if we have SAP S4HANA Cloud only. BTP ABAP Platform trail is similar to ABAP platform trail which is coming as Docker version right?

Another doubt is , Can we develop SAP Fiori Apps with SAP BTP Platform trail to make developer hands dirty? or this is possible only in SAP ABAP Platform trail

Best Regards,

Praveen

Hi Praveen,

SAP BTP ABAP environment is SAP’s Platform-as-a-Service offering to create innovative ABAP applications and extensions in the cloud. It provides the modern ABAP RESTful Application Programming Model, leveraging SAP HANA, SAP Fiori, and a cloud-optimized ABAP language with a clear set of released standard APIs. Developers can utilize a development toolset that enables tight integration with Git-enabled lifecycle management.

There are different types of offerings to tryout BTP ABAP Environment:

BTP Free Tier Option: this option each customer has their own instance - is (soon) limited to 90 days. It is suitable for PoC purposes and allows a seamless transition to the paid standard version without data loss within the 90 days.

BTP Shared Trial: is the official version of BTP. Also limited to 90 days. The main difference to the Free Tier is that the instance is shared by all trial users. It is intended for testing purposes only and cannot be converted to the paid Standard version.

And then there is ABAP Platform 1909 offering:

ABAP Platform 1909: is the trial version of the ABAP Platform, which is provided as a Docker image. It is intended for educational, configuration and testing purposes as well as open source projects. This version is not on the BTP. The current version is 1909.

These are the options  to try out ABAP. SAP BTP ABAP Environment options are to try out ABAP on BTP and develop side by side extensions with the newest ABAP version (release cycle 3 months).

The BTP ABAP platform does not contain any specific application logic such as sales or financial applications that are found in ERP systems.

"Another doubt is, Can we develop SAP Fiori Apps with SAP BTP Platform trail to make developer hands dirty? or this is possible only in SAP ABAP Platform trail?"

-> Yes, you can develop SAP Fiori apps using all SAP BTP ABAP offerings.

Best Regards,

Hi PraveenChitturi

I would like to refer to your question:
"Does BTP ABAP Platform is equal to on-premise ABAP platform which is integrated with HANA database?"

Does this blog help you?

Hi Wolfgang,

That's quite helpful document in getting to know and the best recommendations the new extensibility in S4HANA cloud and on-premise version. I will go-through that.

My question is about ABAP instance in SAP BTP. Can we understand the BTP ABAP instance as the NetWeaver ABAP cloud version or not. The terms and new cloud technology is getting little confusion to understand.

Best Regards,

Praveen
