Following an audit in June 2013 conducted by TÜV Rheinland, a place that ranks things in regards to technical safety, quality, performance and/or efficiency, SAP Data Centers were granted Premium Certification. The SAP Data Centers I and II are located in St. Leon-Rot, a town located 10 kilometers from SAP’s Walldorf headquarters, received 95.7% and 98.5% energy efficiency respectively. According to TÜV Rheinland, these are the highest certifications of the 50 data centers they have evaluated so far.

According to martin.heisig, Head of Infrastructure Services & SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud Operations at SAP, auditing is important because SAP needs to demonstrate the efficiency of its data centers as well as guarantee the safety of customer data. “We not only have our data centers certified by external providers, we also perform internal audits on a regular basis. With this external cross-check we can assure that the results are valid and continuously improve.”

He says efficiency is vital, as the data centers are core to SAP’s cloud business. With SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud offering customers the option to run their business processes on the SAP cloud, it is essential that SAP runs customer data safely, cost-effectively, as well as efficiently.

Efficiency is also vital from an environmental standpoint. He says that such excellent audit results for our data centers confirms SAP’s decision to invest in the newest technologies - without increasing our carbon footprint.

This achievement represents the joint efforts and close collaboration SAP Global Facility Management and SAP Global IT, who strive to improve the company’s green technology and efficiency. And while Martin concedes the figures of 97.5% and 98.5% are “outstanding!”, he’s not content to let SAP rest on its laurels. “There is always room for improvement, and SAP is always interested in improving our efficiency.”
