SAP and SAP Insider sponsored this webcast last week.  Given that it talks about the future the usual disclaimer applies that things are subject to change.  The slides are available here for download.  SAP's erich.schneider did most of the presentation.  These are my rough notes.

Back in June Guide to Analytical Capability Embedded within SAP Business Suite - EMEA Webcast SAP's thierry.audas mentioned that HANA Live as being part of Embedded Analytics.

Inside SAP ERP the Logistics Information System (LIS) and Sales Information System was used (SIS).  These reports were used for purchasing, inventory and sales.

In the past you had to replicate the data from the source tables in ERP to LIS reporting structure, e.g. S001 – sales order reporting, etc.  Communication structures with update codes and update rules were used.  But the issue was it was updated by events - such as events for sales order, delivery creation and completion.   The built-in logic was not in general use for extractions.  This was the reason for stove pipes in past.

Also, the SAP developers were on different teams.  The relational database had performance issues.  With more than 200K sales orders, performance not acceptable any more.

You could use ABAP / SAP Query to combine data but still to reach critical mass, performance was difficult.

With HANA Live, SAP says, you don’t need to replicate data inside/outside ERP, it has zero latency, you can extend the models.  As Figure 1 shows, HANA Live is now GA.

HANA Studio is the tool used.

SAP said you can translate names of technical names of fields into business language.

You can use views to encapsulate SQL models to reuse in multiple reports.  These views can be consumed by BI clients.

Also note as Figure 2 shows on the bottom that HANA Live is a separate package for the SAP Business Suite.

Figure 3: Source: SAP

Figure 3 shows it is not using the BICS proprietary interface but open interfaces such as oData, SQL and MDX

You can can create atomic datasets for views for direct drill down.

HANA Live is different from data marts, warehouses - there are no aggregates

It uses calc views of HANA studio.

Figure 4 shows that HANA Studio is using virtual data models to see complexity of underlying source tables and how they are translated / converted.

Figure 5 shows the BI BusinessObjects tools that can be used, and the planned tools to be supported in Q4, including Design Studio.

See slide 22 for deployment scenarios.

Figure 6: Source: SAP

Figure 6 shows that a run time license use to extend content; a full use license is required if customer wants to use.

You use HANA Studio to create user provisioning, use NetWeaver Identity Management to manage tools,

Figure 7 shows the SAP HANA Live Authorization Assistant, used to create ABAP users.

I recommend reviewing slides 40-42 for the Future Outlook, including LAVA language.
