Mobile devices today give us all some experience with 2D geo-spatial information and the value of understand the locations of assets. Newer applications also present analytic results right on the maps themselves so we may view a “report” with the additional understanding of the adjacency and density of important findings.

For example, here we see the production loss pattern in an oil field for three months, overlapping with a high dust area, showing in this case 12 wells with severe losses observed.

SAP Dashboards now supports 3D models using an Add-on from Visual Enterprise. This Add-On comes with the SAP #D Visual Enterprise Viewer which can be downloaded from Service Market Place, or from SCN (http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/downloads?rid=/webcontent/uuid/00811fac-caea-2f10-b8a0-b4152739d1eb).

The 3D Add-On allows an analytic application to be built that uses the 3D Model as a visual index so that clicking on a part(s) can drill down to related ERP, or database data. It also supports changing the visual scene based on analytic results so that a 3D Spatial Analytic display may be used for process, plant, or structural investigations and monitoring. You can locate problem areas in your plant, or you can identify the maintenance status of your machines, and the production status of your cells in the factory.

3D adds enormous value to ordinary dashboards. For more details see this blog:
