Figure 1 represents the different connectivity options between the tools, showing direct access.

Lumira Desktop can connect directly to ERP system against ERP InfoSets.

Figure 2: Source: SAP

Figure 2 shows the interface with Lumira using Freehand SQL against the SAP ERP InfoSet.  This is with 1.0.11 Lumira Desktop.

They are working on adding support for SAP queries and ABAP function modules.

Figure 3: Source: SAP

Figure 3 shows authored access, which means you need an UNX universe that will connect to ERP system. It will look like another relational source and add semantics on top of your SAP ERP system.  It exists today in BI4.0 but in BI4.1 has some improvements

Figure 4: Source: SAP

Figure 4 shows in BI4.1 SAP has added join detection.

Figure 5: Source: SAP

Figure 5 shows joins are detected with primary key/foreign key relationships in the data foundation of the Information Design Tool.

The ABAP functions, etc. appear as tables and then you create the business layer.

Figure 6 shows improvements in Input Columns

Parameters are mapped as input columns.

This exists in BI4.0 but improvements have been made in interface

Figure 6 shows the 3 options to improve the UI

Figure 7: Source: SAP

Figure 7 shows the integrity check will now detect unresolved mandatory input column. If you select a multi-value prompt (not supported) this will be detected.

Figure 8: Source: SAP

Figure 8 shows BI4.1 has support for optional parameters.

Prior to BI4.1 prompts were all mandatory, even if optional in SAP ERP.

Part 2 of this blog will focus on the BW connectivity against BI4.1
