Remember back when you had to drive to the store to buy something? Or what about fighting your way through crowds during the holiday season because there weren’t any other options? Before the ecommerce era, shopping was time-consuming and stressful. It was often difficult to find sought-after products and even more challenging to bargain shop for the best deal. Small business owners were limited as well, only able to sell to local consumers. At the time, these issues were not even perceived as challenges – that was simply the way it was. But in retrospect (much like with the proliferation of mobile phones) it’s painful to think of life without these conveniences and I often wonder just how small businesses survived. Luckily for over 100 million eBay members, and the 30,000 new ones that join each day, these problems will disappear soon.

As the world’s largest marketplace, eBay has been helping small businesses like Wheel & Sprocket achieve greatness and users like Jack Sheng reach a feedback score of over two million for nearly two decades. Business is certainly booming for eBay, but analyzing one billion transactions per day does have its challenges. The company needed a better way to sift through its massive 100 petabytes of data to separate the signals from the noise. In other words, eBay wanted to provide key intelligence to sellers, improving predictability and communicating areas of opportunity in timely fashion.

eBay needs more than 300 analysts, just for their North America marketplace, studying data on a full-time basis. A large part of their process tends to be manual relying on a degree of luck and lots of experience. Consequently, signals are missed leading to delayed corrective action. SAP demonstrated a solution which would give eBay real-time insights into the health of their marketplace using machine learning and predictive analysis powered by the SAP HANA platform.  SAP HANA is able to analyze 500 metrics and select the best model automatically to determine true positives with 100% accuracy at 97% confidence. This reliable automated detection system will free up bandwidth so eBay analysts can spend their time on strategic tasks and eBay can focus on what it does best: connecting buyers with things they need and love.
