In the previous parts (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4) we focused on available options for customers that so far have not made the decision to move to a data warehouse implementation.
In this part of the blog series we are looking at customers in landscape #5, which means we have a customer that has SAP and non-SAP applications on the OLTP layer and a custom DWH solution not using any of the available SAP Technology. To put it in slightly different words, this is a customer that has SAP and non-SAP applications and did not deploy SAP NetWeaver BW, did not deploy SAP HANA, but instead uses a non-SAP RDBMS system for the DWH Solution.

Figure 1 shows the scenario, where the customer created a DWH solution and all the data from the SAP and non-SAP systems is being loaded into the custom DWH solution. Yes – we are all aware that not all of our customers are using SAP NetWeaver BW as a DWH solution and we are all aware that our customers have hybrid solutions, but what are some options how a customer with a custom DWH could benefit from SAP HANA ?

Figure 2 shows the first scenario, how a customer with a non-SAP DWH solution could leverage SAP HANA as an agile data mart environment. In the scenario data from SAP ERP could be replicated using SLT into SAP HANA and the customer could also leverage SAP HANA Live to leverage the pre-configured content for SAP HANA. In addition to the information from SAP ERP, the customer could also load data from the DWH solution into SAP HANA and combine the information in form of data models in SAP HANA.

Figure 3 shows another scenario, how a customer with a non-SAP based DWH solution could still benefit from SAP HANA. In this scenario SAP HANA also functions as a data mart scenario, but instead of loading data from the DWH into SAP HANA, we are this time leveraging real time data coming from event streams or social networks such as Twitter or Facebook, and load this information into SAP HANA.
In addition to the real-time data, we could also load data form the OLTP environment into SAP HANA, and in that way combine the data from our OLTP layer with the real-time data. Last but not least, with the upcoming federation capabilities from SAP HANA (smart data access) we could also combine all this information with data that is already in the custom DWH (depending on the underlying RDBMS system) and in that way create a SAP HANA model combining data from the OLTP system with data from the DWH and streamed information.
In addition you will also notice that using the Universe layer of the SAP BusinessObjects suite is another option to combine the data from the customer DWH with the data stored in the SAP HANA layer by creating a multi-source Universe.
I hope this outlines how even a customer with a non-SAP based DWH solution could benefit from SAP HANA.
