What a wonderful surprise! Sylvana Chang asked me to participate in the “Blog it Forward” initiative. Great fun, I’m in ;-). For those of you who don’t know me (which I assume are a lot), my Name is Ronald Konijnenburg and I live in the Netherlands. For the rest, I think my Twitter profile pretty much sums it up:

Retired semi-professional Poker player, Apple fanboy, Information junkie, Principal BI Consultant @logicanl. Occasional Hacker.

Add to this my addiction to SAP HANA and you should get a pretty good first impression what makes me tick. As for the rest, Sylvana made it pretty easy for me to introduce myself as she gave some great questions. So let’s go!

Fun fact about you

I used to spend every single free moment playing Poker. I played in hundreds of tournament online as well as in good old “brick and mortar” casino’s (some more legal then others ;-). “Were you any good” you might ask? Nah, your average “Joe the poker player”. I was always slightly up, but never made that big score. I am still a member of a Poker club and play occasionally but by no means with the same dedication I had before. I however still dream to play in the main event in the World Series of Poker one day. In case anybody wants to back me for that 10k buyin let me know ;-). Little warning, you probably have a better chance of winning the lottery then me making it into the money.

Where is your favourite place? Why?

I do not really have a favourite place as I still have so many to visit. I do enjoy big cities like Paris and Barcelona and love to spend my summer in the South of France, relaxing, swimming, drinking wine and be with my beautiful family (Brenda and our 3 kids Nikki, Jamie and Bobby). They mean the world to me. We are planning a trip to Miami next year which might become my favourite place in the world. I am a huge “Miami Vice” fan and a member of a “Miami vice community” who will have a meet up in Paris in September to meet the original cast of “Vice”. Slightly embarrassing to admit, but bring on that pastel!

What was your dream job as a child?

To become a SAP consultant! Well not really. I actually have no clue. I don’t think I had a dream job growing up. I was way to busy playing with my friends and goofing around to be thinking of anything beyond that. I probably thought at one point or another that being a F16 pilot might be a good idea. Growing up in the 80s does that with you (Top Gun!).

Name the person who affected you most in your career/way of thinking and why?

Without a doubt: my dad. The best friend a guy could have in this world. My father was in construction who crushed his back at the age of 40. Instead of giving up, he fought back and managed to become a cook. He was happy with the easy things in life and was incredibly proud of me. Even though my father passed away a couple of years ago, he still motivates me to do the best I can. I still have the thrive to make him proud and show him I try to follow his example of being a great dad.

I'd like to blog it forward to (imo) the captains of battleship HANA:

juergen.schmerder

john.appleby3

alvaro.tejadagalindo

No sample questions for them, I’m sure they’ll manage to come up with an interesting read no matter what the question is!

Thank you for reading this and take care,

Ronald
