Since the introduction of SAP NetWeaver BPM in May 2009, the Utilities sector has experienced the highest adoption of SAP NetWeaver BPM by customers and partners. I was curious to understand why. Therefore together with my colleague Matthias Weber who is part of the BPM solution marketing team we reached out to Utilities industry solution management team at SAP to understand the relevance of BPM for Utility companies.
We discovered that the adoption of BPM by Utility companies is driven primarily to address inefficiencies in processes that span the complex and changing ecosystem caused by for example de-regulation in Europe. The figure below depicts the complex ecosystem and how the different entities interrelate - these processes are loosely coupled using paper, email and telephone.

We documented the application of BPM within the context of the following Utility specific business scenarios:

  • Streamlining new service connections process

  • Managing invoice exceptions

  • Resolving outage incidents

Watch this "BPM in Utilities eBook" to learn how Utility companies can use SAP NetWeaver BPM to extend best practices provided by SAP for Utilities. Hear for example how GISA, a leading IT service provider in Germany can drive quantifiable value for their customers such as 20-30% reduction in integration costs and 50% reduction in development times - all by taking a BPM approach to streamlining Utility specific processes. The eBook also highlights why Stedin, a Dutch power transport management company selected SAP NetWeaver BPM. Click on the attachments link in the eBook if you are interested in reading the details of GISA's and Stedin's experiences

I hope that these examples inspire you to come up with business processes within your own organization that could benefit from being automated through SAP NetWeaver BPM.
