With anticipation increasing for the upcoming release of PI 7.3, i thought i would blog about how much simpler and quicker it is now to get up and running with a java only installation of PI 7.3.  A java only PI stack also known as the Advanced Adapter Engine Extended (AEX) is a new installation option of SAP NetWeaver Process Integration. It provides the connectivity capabilities of the Advanced Adapter Engine (AAE) as well as design and configuration tools (ES Repository and the Integration Directory) to set up integration scenarios that are based on the AAE. The AEX is based on AS Java alone. Therefore, it is easier to install and maintain as well as requiring less memory and data storage. More information on the AEX is available here: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/a5/f6e04bdc1d4cdbbb32fa52ccdcc419/frameset.htm  (http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/a5/f6e04bdc1d4cdbbb32fa52ccdcc419/frameset.htm)    When the required preparations to install any SAP system have been completed as per the installation and master guide, the installation can be started by initiating the sapinst file for your chosen OS and DB. Select SAP Systems-->Optional Standalone Units-->Advanced Adapter Engine Extended-->Standard System-->Advanced Adapter Engine Extended More on functional units can be found here: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/9f/870b5dea2649fe92cff527854efadd/frameset.htm  (http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/9f/870b5dea2649fe92cff527854efadd/frameset.htm)   Start the post install by selecting the functional unit System Landscape Directory and  click on Enable automatically. This will open another window where the configuration wizard is running.Enter the java administrator password and master password to start the wizard. When the wizard has completed successfully, close the window and go back to the functional unit selection page. Select the Advanced Adapter Engine Extended functional unit and click on Enable automatically. Enter the required passwords for the various PI* users, click next and enter any required infomration at the user prompts.   More info on the PI AEX configuration wizard is available in SAP note 1414465. When the wizard completes you have successfully configured the Advanced Adapter Engine Extended for PI    The final configuration step is the services registry configuration, follow the same procedure as above to start the configuration wizard for the services registry. The steps are also detailed here: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/48/2be46efcc531cbe10000000a42189d/frameset.htm  (http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73/helpdata/en/48/2be46efcc531cbe10000000a42189d/frameset.htm)   You should now have the following functional units enabled and running With the following usage types installed    When the config wizards are complete restart the instance. The AEX wizard in particular requires a restart of the instance for the changes to take effect. I waited until all the wizards were complete before restarting. After restarting you will be able to access the tools to start developing your first scenario.
