Network Optimization
So what is up with the post office and the PRC these days? If you don’t recall the United States Postal Service is looking into facilities to close to help them save money. The plan last year was to realign the network with hundreds of postal facilities closures. There was going to be a Federal Register notice published that would allow for comments followed by a comment period all about 90 days long that would get us to implementation by April 2012 however that is now on hold or at least that’s how I understand it.
Here is what we know so far. The USPS was looking at closing all most 250 facilities. There is a current study out there that is called “Area Mail Processing” (AMP). This study is a list of facilies they are looking into for closure. Is your SCF/DDU on the list? Here is what they were checking last September. http://about.usps.com/news/electronic-press-kits/our-future-network/study-list-110915.pdf
Since that time, our US Senate has now been involved and the USPS have postponed this closure notice until May15, 2012. I did however find a great site that lists in more detail to savings that the USPS thinks it will obtain by closing a plant. http://about.usps.com/streamlining-operations/area-mail-processing.htm It also gives you a breakdown of sites, it tells you if a has a public meeting has been held, and if your site been approved for closure. You can view PDF’s that the USPS has made in regards to the facilities and I can only assume this is what they will be working off of when these closures do take place so check and see where things are at for your sites. Here is some info on a facility that is close to us, “your development team”, and what I learned. I really wish I knew about this meeting I would have liked to have been there. The link below will take you to the study that was done for this facility it will give you details about the network realignment and show you a map of the United States and all of its proposed closures and what it would look like once done. I urge you to look at it!
