“A free software trial is a cookbook, and ExperienceSAP is a sample of the gourmet meal.” That’s what Julie Blaufuss, Sr. Director of SAP’s ExperienceSAP team, told a group of SAP Mentors and SCN advocates. That got my attention. We received a sneak preview of the newest ExperienceSAP program (which launches today) – the 2011 Baseball Experience!

If you’ve read my previous blogs introducing the Experience SAP and the Stanley Cup hockey playoff, or Between You and Me: 2010 FIFA World Cup predictor and more!, you’ll know that ExperienceSAP is all about letting you get hands-on with SAP’s premier analytics and dashboard solutions without you realizing you’ve got your hands on them.

In a way, the ExperienceSAP team has taken this formula:

  • sports + data = too much statistics to remember and be useful

And transformed it to this:

  • [sports + data] + hands-on examples with business analytics tools = useful and relevant insight

This is wonderful for a business user like me. I can appreciate the ingredients and preparation that goes into creating a gourmet meal, but in the end, my biggest care-about is the experience of tasting that meal.

Applying these tools to sports scenarios is a good way to start conversations (regardless of whether or not you’re a Major League Baseball fan). The fun-factor and opportunity to find and answer my own questions are also pluses. That's because there are 7 years of baseball knowledge, and about 100 different statistics to access.

What I think is really important for anyone going through the various scenarios and games to realize is that they are actually using the analytics tools without needing any instructions. Hopefully they are also seeing the different uses and possibilities of such Business Intelligence tools to transform data into knowledge.

For those of you interested in what went into this gourmet meal:

The ExperienceSAP team maintains a wiki page on SCN where you’ll find how-to, downloads and other useful documentation to explain how these activities were created. I’m sure information on how the Baseball Experience was created will be revealed soon. For those looking for the cookbooks, you can get free trial downloads of SAP’s business analytics software.

In the meantime, please check out the 2011 Baseball Experience.
