This is a follow-up to my previous posting on SEO called Click Here. In this post I write about the far reaching importance of keyword meta tag selection when generating and submitting content on SCN.

Keywords = Meta Tags

Sifting through the tens of thousands of SCN webpages, documents and eLearnings (hitherto "assets") is a daunting task.  Luckily, the SCN content team is always hard at work tagging each item to ensure they are visible via search and enhanced search.

Of course, the whole system also depends on our now mark.yolton/blog/2010/03/03/it146s-official-sap-community-2000000-strong tagging their submissions and content. With so many cross topic technologies being interpreted in different ways (e.g. Topic Vs Product), your role in asset tagging is important given the wealth of your combined expertise.

Asset Meta Tagging at Work

The SCN meta tags enhance both the site search and external search engine results for the benefit of SEO.

Enhanced Site Search

In terms of site search, the enhanced search released last year allows users to narrow results by:

  • asset category
  • topic
  • product
  • industry
  • development language
  • task
  • date
  • author
  • and more

To see this at work, take a look at this query for all SCN assets and select Article Library. In the left column are the SCN meta tags at work. The navigation you see is the enhanced search results that allow you to 'slice and dice' the results into what you're looking for.  Of course, these results are only as good as what the assets (articles, eLearning, blogs, wikis, etc) were tagged with during the submission process (ie You)!

  • The quantity of assets tagged with the given tag is indicated.
  • Click More to see the full range of tags.

Both of these are highlighted in the screenshot below:

External Search Engines (SEO)

Proper meta tagging also has an impact on external search engines (SEO) to help yield the best results for queries.  Including the primary topic/product in the title and description is very helpful because they will appear in the page

tag & browser title + html description meta tag.  Furthermore, the html keyword meta tag on ratings pages for library assets (articles, eLearning, etc.) is populated with meta tags selected + any free text keywords indicated in the submission. (Google has admitted that it doesn't use the keyword meta tag for its search results; but are still other search engines.)

Your Role in Meta Tagging

How can you help? Use the meta tags!  It's as simple as that.

  • Select all relevant meta tags when submitting content via the ABAP Frequently Asked Questions

  • Select all relevant topics when composing blogs

  • Add standardized labels to wiki posts

  • Report any mislabeled library assets to SDNContent@sap.com (Include the URL in your message!)
