Working as a Functional Consultant is one of the most sought careers in SAP. Before you decide to race for a SAP career, you should first ask yourself ‘Why SAP is best for me, and why right now?’

One fairer question you must ask yourself, do I have reasonably good presentation and communication skills? To illustrate, if you are a Recruiter, can you deliver a detailed session on what is recruitment to a group of VP, Sr. Managers and Middle Managers? If the answer is ‘No’, you should work behind the screen as Administrator/Programmer instead. Their communication/presentation skill demands are usually limited to peers.

For professionals, the next question should be what are the capabilities of the product to support your roles in an organization? As you dig out answers you should check if this software really sounds like love of life? If the answer is yes, you can put the combination of Commitment, Experience, Opportunities, and Strengths together to break into SAP.

On the other hand, fresh graduates must first consider minimum one year (ideally 3 years) of experience in Industry experiencing domain before taking up SAP Functional role. Fresh Engineering/Technology graduates are still taken as Programmers/Administrators by large ‘Integration Partner’ Companies. One may choose to be a Technical Consultant for first two years, and then switch over to become Functional Consultant. Fresher should not feel this fact otherwise, as solid domain experience prepares you for strong Functional Consultant. That is the beauty of SAP – your all experiences are valued!
