The adoption of SAP's SOA strategy on the Swiss healthcare opening doors to market innovation. The complex develops out of the simple, so this is the main reason why I wanted to share a local development called Docbuddy. Docbuddy has been developped by one of our most innovative special expertise partner for NetWeaver in the healthcare segment: emineo.

Hospitals recieve and produce thousands of patient- and case related documents daily - patient records, lab reports, claim forms and so on. These documents are manually sorted according to complex criteria and filed into physical folders or DMS systems. The process is not only time-consuming; inevitably, there were filing errors and lost documents. This simple use-case shows how on SAP customer gains benefit by using the Enterprise Service that came with EHP4, by combining those services with tools such as Google Desktop Gadget's and SAP PI.

Desktop gadgets are interactive mini-applications that can be placed anywhere on the user's desktop – or docked in the Sidebar. Google offers an SDKand an official blog for anyone who wants to write gadgets or plug-ins for Google Desktop. The SDK also allows third-party applications to make use of the search facilities provided by Google Desktop Search.

In this case the desktop gadget communicates with Patient- and Case related enterprise services using SAP PI, and allows hospital employees to search the system for relevant patients and their case numbers. After the employee has selected a document, he can drag it to the google gadget and select the relevant case. The gadget distributes (including Patient and Case Meta-Data) the document  to other health information systems using SAP PI and HL7.
