It has always been a non-trivial exercise to understand which OLAP data sources are supported in which Business Objects products on which operating system. The information has always been available in the Platform Availability Reports (go to http://service.sap.com/bosap-support and click on Supported Platform Documents link or go to http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/businessobjects-articles and find the product you want). However, as there is an individual document for each operating system and yet another set of documents for SAP BW support it has taken quite a bit of work and determination to get the complete picture.

After doing this my self a couple of times and e-mailing the resulting information out to numerous people its probably long overdue for a summary of this information to find its self a more public home.

I've broken out the information by version (XI R2, XI 3.0 and XI 3.1), then by product (OLAP Intelligence, Voyager, OLAP Universes, Crystal Reports) with a table cross-referencing the major OLAP providers (SAP BW, Essbase and Microsoft Analysis Services or MSAS) for the operating systems. Precise information about version numbers of OSs and OLAP servers can be found in the platform reports (though I have provided information about the major version of MSAS).

Other notes

The SAP row for Crystal Reports only refers to access to SAP BW through the OLAP Grid. Crystal Reports has other methods to access SAP BW which do not necessarily conform to the information given here.

OLAP Universe refers to Universes created against OLAP data sources for use in products like Web Intelligence. OLAP Universes are not supported everywhere Universes based on relational databases are. Exact details of this is contained in the platform availability reports.

Support for Microsoft Analysis Services 2008 only appears in XI 3.1
