New Tool for Planning Your Upgrade: The Upgrade Dependency Analyzer

In the last blog of this series, I announced the new FAQ collection on the upgrade topic. Today, I would like to introduce a new tool developed by my team that will help you in the planning phase of an upgrade project: The upgrade dependency analyzer.
Typically, SAP systems like SAP ERP, SAP CRM or SAP SCM are part of an SAP system landscape that contains various interconnected systems. When planning an upgrade of the systems in your landscape, you might want to know whether this has an impact on other systems in your landscape - that is, whether the upgrade requires changes to other systems as well. The new tool provides these insights.
You can now access the upgrade dependency analyzer in SAP Service Marketplace at

http://service.sap.com/uda (SDN login required), and the UI looks like this:

You can use the upgrade dependency analyzer to check the existence of upgrade dependencies between two separately installed SAP systems in your system landscape. The result of is a so-called dependency statement that informs you of any known upgrade dependencies between these systems. In the above example, the user wishes to upgrade to the SAP ERP 6.0 and use the new Learning Solution. She is checking whether this planned upgrade has an impact on another system in her landscape, the SAP R/3 Enterprise Server. The result of the dependency analysis is that there are no known dependencies, and an independent upgrade is possible.
In the second example below, the user wants to upgrade to SAP SCM 2007. He is checking for dependencies between this upgrade and the other system in the landscape, SAP CRM 4.0. The upgrade dependency analyzer informs him that there are some restrictions and provides a link to an SAP note describing them in detail.

Two more dependency statements are available in this tool, "Independent upgrade not possible" and "No interaction", depending on your input.
The upgrade dependency analyzer is also available in SAP Solution Manager, and it will be extended to also include Enhancement Package information. I encourage you to try it out.
