Have you heard about BR*Tools Studio? See our 3-part technical SAP BR*Tools Studio for Oracle: Features for a thorough introduction to our latest GUI-based addition to BR*Tools, SAP's tool for Oracle database administration.

Since our last blog on BR*Tools Studio in September 2007 we’ve been busy with the pilot phase, which has given us valuable feedback to tune the new GUI for production use in real customer environments. This will provide you, our customers, with direct benefits in terms of a streamlined and more productive tool for your daily DBA work.

Besides the improvements from the pilot, we’ve also been continually developing the Studio, prompted by your suggestions coming in from around the world after a series of demonstrations that we’ve given. Many thanks to those of you who took the time to contribute ideas and make suggestions!

As a result, here are the two main new developments we’d like to now announce:

Part 4: Auditing and Multi-Instance Server

AUDITING

By making small adjustments to the role concept, we’ve been able to give the Studio full audit capability. In short, auditing means that:

  • Only an authorized user can execute an action

  • Each action is assigned to only one user at any one time

  • Users cannot remove their trace from an action

All users of the roles Database Administrator and Database Operator are now automatically subject to full auditing.

MULTI-INSTANCE SERVER

Besides the ability to run a local database in a client-server configuration, BR*Tools Studio now supports an alternative three-tier architecture, in which the Studio server runs on its own middle-tier platform. This frees resources on the database server. In addition, you can now simultaneously administer several database instances from one and the same Studio server. The individual DB instances are connected using a configurable remote connection to the Studio server.

With the resulting star configuration – several clients log on to the central Studio server, which in turn connects to several instances – it’s no longer necessary to install the Studio server on multiple database servers. Using BR*Tools Studio to manage a complex landscape is now possible using a single BR*Tools Studio server. All you have to do is enter the instances to be administered in the instance portfolio of the Studio server.

So, fasten your seatbelts and prepare for lift-off: The first general release of SAP BR*Tools Studio 7.10 will be available by download from SAP on Oracle as of November 3rd, 2008.
