Welcome to my first blog entry!

First, let me introduce myself. I work at SAP Labs Israel as a developer in the Federated Portal Network (FPN) Team. I have been developing in Java/J2EE for a couple of years in different platforms and it is very interesting to develop new features in the FPN Team as part of the SAP NetWeaver Portal Platform.

In case you are wondering, our developer team here at SAP Labs is composed of a project leader and another 5 developers and we are working in close cooperation with a couple of colleagues from Product Management and Consulting in order to develop and maintain the FPN features described above, along with other minor functionalities.

For those who are new to FPN, it is essentially a functionality of the portal that focuses on sharing or exchanging content between autonomous portals. It offers a couple of useful features like:

- Remote Role Assignment – reusing complete roles from remote portals and assigning users to it

- Remote Delta Links – reusing specific portal content directory objects like iViews and pages from remote and modifying them

- Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) – integrating Non-SAP content into the portal

For more information about FPN, I recommend the FPN knowledge center, this What is a Federated Portal Network? and the SAP Help Portal.

We were very pleased to What's New in the Portal for 2004 SP20 / 7.0 SP12 on SDN. We have been navigating in SDN for some time and answering some questions in the forums, but now we think that it’s time to start using SDN massively as a channel to get in contact with the community. Please feel free to give your opinion and ideas -- it is very important for us to get feedback from you.

In my blog, I’m planning to publish from time to time (I promise it will be regularly!) the ideas, developments, fixes and other stuff that will come directly from our team. Please consider that this is an unofficial channel, so don’t expect that things being published here will be developed and supported officially by SAP.

Besides this blog, our team is currently working hard to prepare material that is going to be published here at SDN as articles, tutorials, eLearning and other publication formats.

Stay connected…

See you,
Alan Rubin
