Interested in the latest news on the IT scenario SAP NetWeaver Operations? This blog covers the highlights including latest functionalities delivered with SAP NetWeaver 2004s and succeeding support package stacks.
Most of the features are also available for SAP NetWeaver 2004.

Efficiently run an SAP NetWeaver system landscape and ensure reliability by optimizing performance, increasing system availability, support business application, legal compliance and security issues, ensure flexibility, and speed up administration and problem solving tasks SAP NetWeaver Operations covers tools, tasks, and methods that focus on : Monitoring and Administration, Adaptive Computing (Adaptive Computing Controller) and Data Archiving,

MONITORING AND ADMINISTRATION

The SAP NetWeaver Administrator (NWA) that offers the following key features:

  • Central: Administration, Monitoring, Reporting, Job Scheduling and Central Print Management for single instances or complete landscapes; Problem detection and problem analysis in ONE tool. One major novelty is for example SAP NetWeaver Central Print Management (NWCPM), a co-development with the SAP Partner Hewlett-Packard, that lets you define, configure, and manage all printers and print jobs in your SAP landscape from one central location. This increases reliability and reduces administration costs.
  • Usable: Task oriented navigation; Screens follow newest SAP UI standard WebDynpro
  • Extensible: frame for administration plugins and one single entry point for easy navigation into other SAP NetWeaver administration functionality
  • RemoteWebDynpro based, runs in a browser
  • Easy to implement: The Template Installer is available to perform the configuration for the NWA more quickly and simply. With the Template Installer, the system prompts you for the required information, step-by-step, and then performs the configuration steps automatically. A particular advantage of this way of working is that you can perform all of the configuration steps centrally in one place.

SAP Central Job Scheduling by Redwood
This is a real-time event-driven job scheduling and process automation solution that manages all background processes from one or more applications on one or more servers in your environment. Suitable for any size of organization across all industries, SAP Central Job Scheduling by Redwood provides centralized control over any single or multiple-step suite of tasks, mediating and resolving complex dependencies between disparate applications and systems using a combination of event driven and calendar based scheduling. A choice of Windows or web-based interfaces provides users detailed information about the status of all processes and all interdependencies. SAP Central Job Scheduling by Redwood offers automatic error control and error handling, including notification of process status and disposition. There are two flavors of this tool: The free-of-charge basic version schedules your SAP landscape. The full version includes further functionality such as mass activity, triggering activities on operating system level and scheduling non-SAP systems.

Benefits are:

  • The NWA is the Successor of Visual Administrator, therefore Visual Administrator functionality will be included into NWA. Because the NWA can be called remotely, there is no need to open OS access.
  • The NWA is the first tool which combines ABAP and Java; ABAP and Java monitoring data is presented together in a clear and structured way in a single application.
  • The Central landscape wide administration actively reduces TCO.

Analyzing the System Performance (The collection of the ABAP statistics records that is displayed in transaction ST03 has been improved and extended)

  • The collector now works configuration-free
  • The architecture has been optimized so that is is also possible to calculate system-wide monthly and weekly aggregates for very large systems
  • The analysis views Web Statistics (with the protocols HTTP, HTTPSm SMTP) DB connection statistics and VMC statistics have been added tot he Workload Monitor

SAP´s ADAPTIVE COMPUTING

The Adaptive Computing Controller covers:

  • Application service management and Resource management,
  • Control (start/stop/relocation of application services)
One of the major fundamentals of the Adaptive Computing Controller 1.0 is the ability to start/stop or relocate an adaptive enabled application service.
An application service (which can be any part of an SAP landscape) can be easily assigned or deassigned to a server (physical or virtual) without having the need for installation or manual configuration.
The user gets information like service name, system id, description, status location as well as requirements to the service and all application services properties.
  • Observing (physical and logical landscape)
  • Task planner functionality
This function provides the ability to execute standard operations like start, stop and relocate of an application service based on an integrated task planning.
All manner of applications commonly need to schedule tasks for repeating execution. For instance Enterprise applications need to schedule daily logging or overnight batch job processes. The demand for the ability to plan tasks is especially high in operation related applications such as the Adaptive Computing Controller.
The more comprehensive the management of the adaptive enabled landscapes gets the higher the administrative overhead will be.
So there is a need to rationalize recurrent or future operations.
  • Mass Operations
With the new UI this function enables you to define the mass start/stop operations (multiple services) at one time and execute these operations.
Any errors will be logged in the controller log. The user easily selects a line on a higher level than the service itself (for example System ID, Group or Pool).
All corresponding services which are in the lower levels under this selection are shown in the window below with their current status.
With the toolbar the user can switch from “No Action” (default selection) to “Start Services” or “Stop Services”. All actions are logged in the Controller Log.
  • Adaptive Server enabling within the ACC
Server Enabling - this function provides an additional way to adaptive enable the servers in the ACC and set the information of pools and networks.
Up to ACC 1.0 SP8 to adaptive enable servers within an Adaptive Computing Environment had to be done within the Solution Manager System in transaction smsy.
With ACC 1.0 SP8 servers can adaptive enabled within the tool itself.
  • Support of multiple services on one server
Multiple Services on One Server - this function enables you to run multiple services on one server at the same time by setting the specific parameter to different values

DATA ARCHIVING methods offer:

  • Enhanced legal compliance support
Archive Routing - a new function to route archived data to separate content repositories; supports end-of-life of data.
XML-based archiving – new standards-based archiving technology for ABAP and JAVA applications.
  • Enhanced Analysis and Monitoring Tools
New more optimized table analysis functions offered in transaction TAANA.
New more sophisticated and user-friendly logs and statistics functions.
  • Enhanced Data Archiving and Access Functions
    Cross-Archiving-Object Check/Delete function.
New function module for archive access.
