Headline of an eWeek article from March 28th: SAP Pins Hopes on NetWeaver Developer Community - Wait a second, that is us here at SDN. http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/pub/u/40518 [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] was hired to bring the Developer Community to the next level. He is is quoted as saying:

The goal here is really to take the rich heritage of the company, which is all built on the ABAP [Advanced Business Application Programming] language, and extend that through a set of WSDL [Web Services Description Language] interfaces as a set of services that can be incorporated into a set of applications

Read the article, there are some interesting community things George is working on. This week you can hear him first hand. He is the keynote speaker at the SDN Meets Labs in Palo Alto. He will present the ESA Community Process:

There has been much talk about SAP moving beyond enterprise applications into a role as a platform provider for enterprise services. Why does that matter to those of you who deal day-to-day in curly braces, data sets, objects, and function calls?

There are at least two reasons. George Paolini, new to SAP as its head of "Ecosystem Development," will elaborate. First reason: The new Enterprise Services Architecture platform will provide a fundamental change in the way applications are created. By providing a set of industry-standard services, SAP will provide developers functionality that can be more easily accessed to create applications that drive enterprise business processes. And, second reason: This new Enterprise Services Architecture platform will provide developers a voice in how the platform evolves over time through a new, open forum. Join Paolini as he discusses the emerging Enterprise Services Architecture and the ecosystem that will be built around it.

What if you want to be part of the event, although you are not one of the 100 lucky ones who are in Palo Alto? Number one we will tape all sessions and make them available on SDN as soon as we can."That is nice, but I want to also ask questions and see the reaction of the people in the room during the event."

We are also working on making that possible. We will webcast the whole SDN track, all the sessions as well as the keynote and the strategy panel on Thursday afternoon. We will have an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) channel open the whole time for the discussion and will project these on big monitors next to the presentation slides for everyone to see:
Server: irc.freenode.net
Channel: #sdnmeetslabs
(Choose your IRC client if you don't have one already.)

We are having open Wifi in the rooms, so if you bring a Wifi enabled computer, you can also get on the IRC chat and be part of the backchannel (More on conference backchannels on Corante). We did some trial runs, but you know with technology there is no guarantee. It would be super cool if this works out, because every SDN member who is interested can be part of it from his home or work, and all of these sessions with these people will only be shown in Palo Alto.

You may have heard http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/pub/u/6806 [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] earlier this month has been named head of software development for the whole of SAP. This additional responsibility is the reason, why he has not been doing any http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/weblogs?blog=/pub/u/6806 [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] lately. But you can read about his thoughts in an eWeek interview: SAP's Focus: Getting Pieces to Work in Harmony. Cross your fingers, there is still a small chance that he will briefly show up on Thursday morning for a couple of words during the keynote.

Bring your digital camera or picture phone too and load your results to Flickr. I have started an SDNMeetsLabs Tag as well as an SAP Developer Network group. Not sure yet where this is going, but it was fun at SAP TechEd. Check back often.

California weather has been strange lately I can hear the rain dripping on the roof just outside my window right now and it's not the exception. Keep an eye on the weather forecasts. Google is giving you only a 4 day window:

So there was still hope, until I checked Yahoo weather:

They are having a five day forecast: Few Showers on Thursday evening? Oh no. What about our plans to enjoy some food, drinks, a band and some games on the big deck on the back of Building D? Please eat up and finish all your plates this week, to insure good weather at least that Thursday evening.

As I wrote before if you are in town already on Wednesday evening there is an unofficial get together at the Gordon Biersch 640 Emmerson Street in Palo Alto starting at 7pm in the evening.

P.S. Small correction, in our email to the participants we wrote that the keynote starts at 9am. We want to give people coming from the far time to reach us (through the rain?) that morning. Introduction and Keynote starts at 9:30. But of course you are welcome to check in at 8:30 already and get familiar with the premises.
