SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition is an intelligent, cloud-based ERP solution that offers a wide range of business functions to help enterprises streamline their operations, reduce costs, and increase efficiency. However, every business has its unique requirements and workflows, which means that the out-of-the-box functionality of SAP S/4HANA Cloud may not always meet their specific needs. To address this issue, SAP has provided several extensibility options that enable businesses to tailor SAP S/4HANA Cloud to their unique needs.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud's extensibility concept ensures the stability of software products throughout their lifecycle. Unlike traditional software updates, which rely on customer or partner extensions, SAP software updates are independent of such extensions. This is made possible using appropriate interface approaches, such as using released objects and public APIs. As a result, extensions made to the core of SAP S/4HANA Cloud do not impede upgrades, making them upgrade-proof. If extensions cannot be made directly to the core, they are run alongside it on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

In this blog post, we will discuss some of the extensibility options available for SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition and also review how to navigate the Extensibility content within SAP Activate Roadmap Viewer.

The three ABAP-based extensibility options for SAP S/4HANA Cloud editions are as follows

  • Key user extensibility pertains to the ability of key users to create low-code or no-code extensions, such as modifying the user interface or including custom fields.

  • On-stack developer extensibility allows developers to implement extensions in ABAP directly on the SAP S/4HANA Cloud technology stack using the SAP S/4HANA Cloud ABAP Environment.

  • Side-by-side extensibility refers to the use of developer extensions on the SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) by leveraging its development and runtime environments. In the case of ABAP, this involves utilizing the SAP BTP ABAP Environment.
