Hierarchy is an arrangement of items (objects, names, values, categories, etc.) in which the items are represented as being "above," "below," or "at the same level as" one another - Wikipedia

There have been multiple scenarios in which the business users would want to build their own hierarchies or would benefit from grouping values and then using it in a hierarchy. Lumira has the ability to build Custom Hierarchies on the fly and is pretty simple to learn.

Custom Hierarchy can be built from the Prepare/Visualize room  as shown below,

Best practice would be to finish all the data manipulation in the Prepare room itself.

Go ahead and define the Hierarchy and make the changes required as shown below,

Once the Hierarchy is created, it cannot be modified. So care needs to be taken to define the order, else you would just need to remove it and define a new one.

This new Hierarchy can be consumed directly into the Visualize tab for performing analysis.

We can now navigate by Drill Up/Down options to move across the Hierarchy.

This would enable us to identify outliers and make other decisions easily.

Navigation is also possible back by Drill Up or by modifying the Filter condition.

We can use Custom Hierarchies in different charts. Below is an example of using it in a Crosstab,

We can drill down to find the sum of each sub-category as well by leveraging the hierarchy,

Please note that I have applied filter conditions as well.

This shows how easy it is to build and use Custom Hierarchies to dramatically increase the efficiency of your analysis as compared to seeing only rows and columns in an spreadsheet.
