The Journey Continues - Episode 5 of 10

SO you want to do more with the SAP HANA Cloud Platform (HCP), but you are not sure where to start? Do you have solution architects recommending HCP so you need to come up to speed on it quickly? This week’s topic deals with extending SAP HANA by creating your own cloud-based applications that leverage HCP. The speaker for this webcast was Pankaj Kumar, Product Manager, SAP HANA Cloud Platform. We are now half way through our ASUG sponsored webinar series on SAP HANA for Enterprise Architects. This week’s episode shows just how far the ecosystem for SAP HANA is being extended.

To start off, the speaker went through the compelling reasons for using the SAP HANA Cloud Platform (HCP). This included all of the components that are included:

He then moved on to explain the different use cases as to what you can do with HCP. See the webcast or slides for more details on each of the scenarios. This is a great slide that illustrates the different scenarios that you can use HCP for.

You might be asking yourself at this point, what credentials does HCP have? Pankaj reviews the infrastructure SAP has established to host HCP . They meet all of the normal cloud hosting requirements around security, availability etc. Your organization may have specific requirements around data residency that you may need to look into before you can use this cloud infrastructure.

Another area of interest that was mentioned is the use of OData as a data source for SAP. There are many different vendors (Including Microsoft) that are implementing the OData standard, so you should investigate this if you are not already aware of it.

One of the questions most companies have is how do you get on-premises data into your cloud applications? One of the areas of architecture that was addressed by Pankaj is that of connecting your on-premises solution to HCP. The presenter went into detail as to how the cloud connector worked and how it fit into the over all solution architecture. I am sure there are many questions that this brings to everyone’s mind. Comment on the blog and tell us what concerns you might have by implementing this architecture.

But wait, there are more than just data services, there are also other content services available like document services and mobile documents in the HCP solution set. Besides data and document services, there are also portal and security services provided in HCP. I hope that you appreciate the message that Pankaj was putting forward: the SAP HANA Cloud Platform is a rich cloud application development platform where you can develop new or extend existing business applications.

The webcast also included a quick live demo of the different parts of HCP where Pankaj showed how to quickly develop a Fiori based application consuming data from on-premises datasource. It was great that Pankaj showed some of the developer interface used in creating HCP applications.

To round out the webcast, one of the last slides supplied a few links at the end of the presentation to help you out. You can get a free trial to get started. (-but to do any meaningful work, you will need a real production account.)

With so many competing platforms for cloud applications, I see HCP as having certain advantages even if you are not an SAP ERP customer. What are your thoughts on the types of applications you could compose using HCP? How does this compare to the competition?

In the next webcast scheduled for September 15th, the speaker will be covering in more detail how you integrate with the SAP HANA Cloud Platform; you won’t want to miss the next webcast.
