The Journey Continues - Episode 3 of 10
With some of the background established as to why you would want to implement SAP HANA, we now continue in our series with practical advice on how to migrate onto the SAP HANA platform. Damien Johnson, SAP Enterprise Architect North America, gave an excellent webcast with all kinds of links and tools to help you migrate to SAP HANA from your current platform. We all have questions around what tools to use, how to size the environment, best practices etc. Johnson answers all these questions in the presentation.
There are many paths to SAP HANA, so you need a migration plan. Johnson lays out the plan on how to start evaluating what this might look like. We all worry about compatibility and effort to migrate; this was addressed as well as options for optimizing performance on SAP HANA. I am sure everyone who migrates wants to see performance optimized.

There are different tools available to help you in your migration, based on what your end goal is. Johnson reviewed the capabilities of the different tools based on what you are trying to accomplish. Are you going to migrate all at once? BW first? Business Suite first? How are you going to upgrade so you meet the required versions necessary for SAP HANA? The different tools SAP provides can assist you in the planning and migration, but you need to be aware of them.
SAP has learned much over that past few years around sizing your SAP HANA environment and Johnson reviewed the tool and background as you go through this exercise. You want to avoid costly mistakes in building your environment, so use the Sizing tool and appreciate the guidelines that Johnson mentions to assist you.
As Enterprise Architects, you are constantly trying to answer the questions: Why are we doing this? In the presentation, Johnson proposes some TCO savings:
SAP has many more data points as to the HANA savings as greater numbers of customers have migrated to the platform. Johnson quoted over 3600 customers running on SAP HANA now, which gives a measure of credibility to their savings numbers. Your mileage may differ, but it is good to know that other customers are seeing substantial savings.
So now you have some background on how to migrate, the advantages of running on the new platform, and how you can get there. There are still lots more details to cover, as this is not a trivial migration.
