Other South American Code Jams: Peru-UDP, Peru-PUCP, UP

On 14 April, we started our 2 country, 4 university tour of South America at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in Bogota Columbia.  The class was at the top of a hill, and then on the 7th floor.  It was as if they were trying to find the highest point on campus (in a city with an elevation of 8,660 ft, 2,640m) for the guy from sea level (San Jose, CA) to speak.

After catching my breath, we started the event, where we met 40 great students and a number of faculty members.  The event began with some pizza and walking through what a PaaS system is and what they do. Then we dove into more detail about the SAP HANA Cloud Platform and what makes it unique.

We started off the hands portion of the night with the students getting their free HCP trial account (hanatrial.ondemand.com) and then configuring their environment to be able to use the Java EE portion of the HCP.  Next we made sure that everything was working by doing a simple hello world, both on a local server and then running on the HCP.

The second example, showed the students how to do an HCP SAP UI5 application.  The goal of the application was to create a connection to a set of API’s that will give them the weather at a requested city and then to display it in a pleasant way using SAP UI5.  Once they finished the example, the students started expanding on it, adding in new cities, and realizing the power of APIs.

One of the best parts of doing these events, is learning about projects that people are trying to start. In Colombia we learned about a couple of different projects that students were trying to start up around how to improve traffic.  One of the ideas was how they could involve residents and city government to make it easier to ride bicycles.

It was amazing to get an opportunity to go to the beautiful city of Bogota, something I never thought I would ever do.  The people were incredibly friendly, and I hope that we will be able to do another event there.
