A big data-enabled agribusiness network that simplify and orchestrate farmers’ collaboration with seed producers, crop protection chemical suppliers, fertilizer companies, equipment manufacturers, commodity traders and data Brokers can help to drive improved yields and sustainably feed the world’s growing population. The Internet of Things connects smart devices with Farm Suppliers and Service Providers allowing exchange of high amounts of data for better decision making and more precise farming. But how can digitalization of farming - often called precision or smart farming –become real?

At aPrecision Farming summit held by SAP and F4F recently at SAP´s headquarter with around 50 decision makers from 30 companies we presented a show case where data from 3 different farm management systems were taken and mixed with weather, geo and soil data to provide decision support for farmers. The concept proved that F4F easily connect and integrate with various farm management systems and Service providers such as Iteris to get all data assembled for meaningful precision farming analytics, which was executed on SAP´s real-time platform HANA making use of geo-spatial data and visualization tools from Disy. So four companies collaborated successfully to show exemplary the solution for a farmer´s Problem – and that is the future to be successful in Agribusiness. Working together to serve the farmer, which is in the middle of this industry.

Another showcase - called Digital farming, which helps farmers to optimize land use and increase crop yields, was presented by SAP at this year´s CeBIT in Hanover. Digital farming provides a geo-based overview – an aerial image – of the entire farm. Using geo-fencing, it then lets you zoom in on specific areas where you can immediately see portions of any field and any crop in minute detail. Strategically placed sensors Report crucial data, such as moisture content, and weather data. Using HANA to process that data and SAP Analytics for decision support, you can precisely choose where and when to fertilize and what concentration of nitrates to use. Of course, many farmers engage contractors to operate expensive machinery during tillage and harvest. Using telematics, Digital Farming can track contractors’ progress and visualize in real time. A nice overview on this case gives this Video

Another example to connect with farmers comes from Ghana where an SAP Software solution is helping Cashew Farmers. In Wenchi, Western Ghana, SAP and the African Cashew initiative (ACi) are supporting small-scale farmers with innovative technology that benefits actors along the entire agricultural value chain. The farmers are using SAP smart phone apps to get access to farmer information, cashew buying and loading and market information. The software allows traceability in the supply chain between farmers, manufacturing companies and wholesale trade. People on the ground can also use a geographical information system that displays farmer contact data, farm size and location, tree inventory and price information, which makes it easier to forecast and optimize cashew collection.
