As we've mentioned before, mobile devices are outselling PCs 3 to 1, and now new data shows that the smartphone market is fueling all this growth (see the chart to the right via Asymco). Mobile device ubiquity has been around for a while but now it's official: they have become predominantly "smart." And this shift continues to drive expectations and use cases for the enterprise.
SAP follows this closely (not surprisingly) and is interested in enabling employees to "go mobile" quickly and efficiently in the enterprise. SAP Work Manager is one such way that this is accomplished: it is a SAP mobile app focused on Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) and facilitates the maintenance, inspection, and repair of mission-critical assets. For any employee out in the field doing repair work or maintenance, having a mobile device eliminates so many redundancies that are handled tediously in the offline world. Now field workers can be much more productive by cutting out the need for return office trips and physical paperwork.
SAP Work Manager removes many of the previous steps (e.g., printing out of forms, collating & stapling requests, etc.) and automates other processes via workers in the field having a direct connection to their enterprise systems. And even better, there is a rapid-deployment solution (RDS) for Work Manager that covers the most common scenarios via best practices, end-user guides, and preconfigured software and services.
In fact, the latest version of the SAP Work Manager RDS was just released a few weeks ago and includes several new features. Here are a few examples:
- Work Manager Server deployment to SMP 2.3
- View and execute inspection rounds with PRT, wizard driven measurement points reading
- View linear asset data for orders, operations, notifications, functional locations, equipment, characteristics, and measurement readings
- Assign orders, operations, notifications and items to linear assets
- Upload and download attachments to work orders, notifications, equipment, and functional locations
- Set up Agentry development environment
- Support Windows 7/8 (WPF clients)
Also, there are several new service offering options including an on-premise evaluation sandbox deployment (as a proof-of-concept for one device type) with additional tiers up to an on-premise large production for a 3-tier production deployment for two device types. Plus, several new optional components are available, such as Linear Asset Management, DMS attached documents, and an assessment workshop service. And lastly, as mentioned in SAP's "bring your own device" (BYOD) press release last week, the SAP Work Manager RDS works well with the SAP Mobile Secure RDS for going mobile scenarios in need of added protection and extra security.
