It Runs in the Family: How Luine’s Commitment to Learning Transformed Her Life

There is a mantra running in Luines family that every generation knows: “Studying is the only way to improve your life.” It’s what her grandfather taught her mother. And it’s what her mother taught Luine. Knowing the background of her upbringing, it’s no surprise that Luine made it her mantra too. “I am a black woman, and I was born in a poor place in São Paulo, Brazil. My mother raised me and my brothers alone, and I have a great admiration for her because of that”, she recounts. “I don’t know how she could do it – she was working as a teacher and raising a family on her own. She’s my role model and my inspiration”, Luine says. No wonder she followed in her mother’s footsteps – at least kind of.

“Technology is the future”

Luine was the first family member to obtain a master’s in business administration and worked for 12 years in foreign trade and purchase in Brazil. “But I realized that I needed to move my career in a different direction, specifically in the IT area”, she explains. “One of the reasons I wanted to pivot into tech was that people are asked to think outside the box, contribute strategically to the business, and I really believe that technology is the future.” It was then when she encountered SAP’s Women in Tech program and applied for a training. “And I was accepted! This is how my SAP story began.”

Her family wasn’t surprised at all about Luine’s shift into tech, she recounts. “They know when I set my mind to something – I will do it.” And that’s what she did. Luine studied hard to get the skills she would need to succeed. “Getting hired by SAP was my dream, and I knew to achieve good things you will need to work hard”, she says. And it paid off: In November 2022, Luine was hired by SAP as a Business Process Consultant.

Quadrupled income

“My dream came true”, she says, and with her new role Luine immediately saw great impact on her personal life too. “My life changed a lot”, she explains, “compared to the average salary in Brazil I am making about four times more money now.” And that’s only one part of the outcome. There’s also huge gratitude, contentment, and joy in the opportunity to work in her dream job, she says.

But Luine hasn’t forgotten her family mantra. Learning is still a big part of her everyday life. You can either find her browsing through SAP’s dedicated learning materials or catch her studying for her next degree in Intelligent Technology, which she is currently pursuing online besides work. “It’s like my grandfather said: Studying is the only way to improve your life.”
