Advanced Intercompany Processes

For more than a year, the blog post Advanced Intercompany Sales & Stock Transfer in SAP S/4HANA Cloud has attracted particularly great interest.

First, I want to point out here that the related scope items are now available in the Process Navigator:

What's new for Adv. ICo with the 2308 release?

In the new configuration activity Configure Posting Date for Advanced Intercompany Invoices (ID 106441), you can specify for each individual invoicing party which date is to be used for the posting date of the Adv.ICo supplier invoice, the Current Day of Invoice Processing of the Billing Document Date.

Figure 1: New configuration step 'Configure Posting Date for Advanced Intercompany Invoices'

If you are using the advanced intercompany sales process, you can now display the intercompany sales order in the document flow of the intercompany customer invoice.

Now, you can assign a WBS element to the sales order item in the selling company.

Inventory Management

Composite Barcode Scanning

Barcode scanning is widely used for various purposes due to its efficiency and accuracy in capturing and processing information. Barcodes provide a unique identifier for each product. Scanning barcodes eliminates the need for manual data entry, which can be time-consuming and prone to errors. Barcodes facilitate efficient inventory management by enabling real-time tracking of products entering and leaving a warehouse or store. Scanning barcodes during receiving, picking, and shipping operations helps maintain accurate stock levels, reduce stockouts, and optimize reordering.

In recent releases, we have already enabled barcode scanning in many Inventory Management apps (see my blog posts for the releases 2108, 2208, and 2302).

Now, the possibility to handle composite barcodes has been added to the barcode scanning function in the apps:

  • Post Goods Receipt for Purchasing Document

  • Post Goods Receipt for Production Order

  • Post Goods Receipt for Process Order

  • Post Goods Receipt for Inbound Delivery

  • Post Subsequent Adjustment

  • Manage Stock

  • Transfer Stock - In-Plant

Such barcodes are based on the international GS1 standard (see GS1 General Specifications Standard) that allows defining multiple information in one barcode. The next figure shows a composite barcode that e.g. contains GTIN, Packaging Date, and Batch information.

Figure 4: Composite Barcode

Please note that industry is moving toward two-dimensional (2D) barcodes. Check out the GS1 announcement Get Ready for Sunrise 2027. All linear barcodes will be replaced with GS1 QR codes by 2027. SAP S/4HANA Inventory Management is ready for the change.

Therefore, a new central configuration setting has also been created for this purpose. For more information, see Barcode Scanning in Inventory Management.

Check out the next video from our SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition 2308 Early Release Series that shows the composite barcode scanning in the Manage Stock app.

Video 2: 'Manage Stock' app - Composite Barcode scanning + Mass processing via 'Item List'

In addition, the demo video above shows the new Add To List action and Item List section that is described in the next chapter.

Manage Stock - Mass posting with Item List for stock mass posting

The new Add To List action and Item List section enables mass processing for the apps:

  • Manage Stock

  • Transfer Stock – In-Plant

You can post more than one material at the same time if you first temporarily save the selected materials in an item list (Add To List action). From this item list, you can later select the materials to be posted at once.

Figure 5: 'Manage Stock' app - 'Add to List' action for mass posting on 'Item List' section

Analyze Stock in Date Range and Schedule Export for Inventory Analytics

With the 2208 release, we launched the SAP Fiori app Analyze Stock in Date Range that enables you to analyze and monitor goods movement postings for one or more materials in a defined date range (see my 2208 blog post and watch the embedded demo video).

In the app, you can now do the following:
The job scheduling function has been enhanced to start an export report to Microsoft Excel with the
inventory analysis results. The new button Schedule Export has been introduced for direct access. Alternatively, you can open the app Schedule Export of Inventory Analytics from the Fiori launchpad as show in the figure below. With this app, you can schedule a background job to export material stock and posting data for a defined time period. Since the retrieval of large queries can be time-consuming, SAP recommends that you move such queries to resource-uncritical phases of the day.

Figure 6: Open 'Analyze Stock in Date Range' app (F6185) and 'Schedule Export of Inventory Analytics' app (F7493) from Fiori launchpad or use button 'Schedule Export' for direct job scheduling

The new button Schedule Export for direct access to job scheduling is available in both the main page and the detail page of the Analyze Stock in Date Range app.

Figure 7: 'Analyze Stock in Date Range' app - Detail page with button 'Schedule Export'

Schedule Physical Inventory Document Creation

The usability of the Create Physical Inventory Documents app has been improved: You can now schedule a background job that processes the creation of physical inventory documents. In addition, you can combine this creation with a print option using the same background job.

Figure 8: Schedule Physical Inventory Document Creation

Manage Physical Inventory Documents - Post all items at once

The posting function in the Manage Physical Inventory Documents app has been enhanced. You can now make mass postings more conveniently and more quickly. Instead of selecting individual items of a physical inventory document, you can now select and post all items of a physical inventory document at once. Before posting for a complete physical inventory document, you can specify in a dialog the reason for each item difference type (increase/decrease). The possible reasons are displayed in the value help.

Figure 9: 'Manage Physical Inventory Documents' app - post all items of a physical inventory document at once

Create Goods Movement from Reservation

The new Material Document for Reservation app enables you now to create a goods movement directly from a reservation.
With the 2308 release, only movement type 201 is supported due to the fact that movement type 201 is one of the most used movement type in reservations. Note that material documents with movement types 543, 601, 641, 643, etc. will be automatically created by the system based upon the scenario. In addition, note that serialized materials and materials subjected to validation are not supported. Corresponding error messages inform the user if limitations are violated.

The new Material Document for Reservation app is accessible through the Manage Reservation Items app. For this purpose, the button Create Goods Movement has been added in the Manage Reservation Items app.

Label Printing in Goods Receipts

You can now print labels when posting a goods receipt in the following apps:

  • Post Goods Receipt for Purchasing Document

  • Post Goods Receipt for Production Order

  • Post Goods Receipt for Inbound Delivery

  • Post Goods Receipt for Process Order

  • Post Goods Receipt without Reference

In the newly added Number of Labels field, you can manually enter the number of labels to print or let the system calculate the number of printed labels for you. In both cases, you must first maintain the Label type and Lab. Form fields in the material master record under the plant data view.

Warehouse Management

Warehouse Management in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition 2308 Release – What’s New

Today christian.ries published the blog post Warehouse Management in SAP S/4HANA Cloud 2308 – What’s New with a crisp overview of innovation highlights in Warehouse Management and a link to his comprehensive “What’s new presentation”.

Although everything has already been said with Christian’s blog post, I would like to briefly point out two topics here.

Wave Management

Since Warehouse Management was launched in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition in 2018, customers and partners often asked for Wave Management in Warehousing. Thus, it is clear why Markus highlights Wave Management in his 2308 release update video at the beginning of this blog post.

With Wave Management you can now combine warehouse request items for outbound deliveries into waves. You can also split warehouse request items from warehouse requests for outbound deliveries into waves. These waves must be picked and processed at roughly the same time.

In addition to the detailed description of Wave Management in Christian's blog post, I would like to point out the following video in which Markus creates waves using the Schedule Wave Creation app based on the wave templates he defined using the Maintain Wave Templates app. Then he processes waves in the Warehouse Monitor app.

Transportation Management

New blog post "Transportation Management in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition 2308"

Read the brand new blog post from m.oertelt that describes the multitude of Transportation Management innovations in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public edition 2308:

Figure 13: New blog post "Transportation Management in SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Public Edition 2308"

Here I repeat the highlight from Markus’ blog post:

Use of Number of Pallet Spaces and Loading Meters

This feature enables you to define units of measure for the number of pallet spaces and loading meters and take them into account in various process steps within transportation management. You can also calculate transportation charges based on the number of pallet spaces and loading meters.

Read the detailed description of this feature in Markus' blog post here and watch his system demo below:

Logistics Cross Topics

Handling Unit Situation

ODATA API: Handling Unit

With the new operation for this API, you can now create situations for handling units managed in storage locations in Logistics (LO) as well as in Warehouse Management (WM). This new operation can be used by third party Internet of Things (IoT) systems, which collect information from connected sensors attached to handling units. When a critical situation is determined, the third party IoT system can use this operation to immediately inform users in SAP S/4HANA Cloud about what happened and so that corrective actions can be taken quickly. The users in SAP S/4HANA Cloud get the corresponding notification that a critical situation occurred and can navigate to the Monitor Handling Units app for further information.

Figure 14: Handling Unit Situation - Architecture

For further information about the corresponding new situation template and the integration into the Monitor Handling Units app, see Handling Unit Situation and Monitor Handling Units.

Situation Template: Handling Unit Situation

Use the new standard template Handling Unit Situation_Event (Handling Unit Situation) if you want your users of the Monitor Handling Units app to be informed instantly when the measurement of a sensor attached to a handling unit exceeds its defined threshold.

Figure 15: 'Manage Situation Types' app - Detail page of new template 'Handling Unit Situation'

For this new situation template, the information concerning critical situations of the handling unit, for example, the temperature threshold is exceeded, must be sent to a third party Internet of Things (IoT) system, which then creates the situation using the Handling Unit API. For more information, see CreateSituation.

Figure 16: 'Monitor Handling Units' app - Situation notification informs the user that the threshold of 40 CEL was exceed and the current temperature of the handling unit is 77 CEL.

Situation Template Deprecated: Handling Unit IOT

The situation template HU_HANDLINGUNIT_IOT_EVENT (Handling Unit IOT) has been deprecated.

Please use the successor situation template HANDLING_UNIT_SITUATION_EVENT (Handling Unit Situation) to inform users about critical situations, for example, in the Monitor Handling Units app.

Figure 17: 'Manage Situation Types' app - Use new situation template 'Handling Unit Situation' instead of deprecated situation template 'Handling Unit IOT'

For a short recap, the scenario with the deprecated situation template Handling Unit IoT and SAP Internet of Things (SAP IoT) sensors is described in my 2102 blog post.

Serial Number Management - Catch Inconsistencies

Display Serialized Stock Quantities

With the new Display Serialized Stock Quantities app, you can compare the quantity of a material in stock to the quantity of serial numbers assigned to that material at a storage location.
You can easily

  • catch any differences between the quantity of stock and the quantity of serial numbers

  • compare the various stocks of a material against the sum of serial numbers
