What is it about?

The SAP free tier model is an offering you can use to get started with a great variety of BTP (Business Technology Platform) cloud services in an easy and flexible way. Starting with a free tier enables you to try out key capabilities of the related services and helps you decide whether using the service in a productive way would be a good investment. As soon as you decide to do so, you can easily switch to a paid plan of the respective service.

You can find a general overview of SAP’s free tier offering here:

What do you get with SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition free tier

SAP Master Data Governance (MDG), cloud edition is a native cloud solution for the management of Business Partner master data, including processes like central governance, consolidation with best record creation, and data quality management. This app is fully BTP-based and offers governance for core Business Partner data as defined in SAP One Domain Model (ODM). With the free tier you get your own cloud tenant to try out all processes of SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition.

Find this offering here in Discovery Center.

Free tier limitations

SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition free tier offers all processes for Business Partner core data governance, and you can try out the whole functional scope. As the free tier concept is designed as an easy try-out model and is not meant to be a free-of-charge Proof of Concept environment, the free tier usage is limited to SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition itself, and it is not possible to use integration mechanisms such as SAP BTP Master Data Integration (MDI). SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition free tier is limited to storing 5.000 Business Partner records, independently of which MDG process is used.  See details here in SAP Help.

Switching to a paid plan

With the try-out usage of SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition in the free tier model you can easily switch to a paid plan. Once you sign up for either a subscription or usage under a pay-as-you-go model, i.e. CPEA (Cloud Platform Enterprise Agreement) or Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG), the free tier tenant will be switched to a paid service plan of type “TEST”. Additionally, a service plan of type “STANDARD” will be activated. We decided to switch to the Test tenant to avoid carrying over all test data from the free tier usage to your future productive tenant. The switch to a paid plan includes the adherence to SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition’s commercial standards which is currently a minimum licensing of 25 blocks of 5.000 Business Partner records.

Mission in SAP Discovery Center

Along with the free tier model, we have also created a Mission in SAP Discovery Center.

The “Getting started with SAP Master Data Governance, cloud edition (Free Tier)” Mission (https://discovery-center.cloud.sap/missiondetail/4111/) lets you DISCOVER the SaaS (Software as a Service) application and provides comprehensive information about the overall Master Data Governance context and the functional scope of the cloud application. It lets you SET UP and configure the software either with BOOSTER or manually, and it lets you gain HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE with exercises highlighting central governance, master data consolidation, and data quality management.
