The Hannover Messe is one of the world's largest industrial technology trade shows, and visiting the SAP booth there can be an enlightening experience. As you approach the booth, you're greeted by a large display showcasing some of the latest SAP technologies, including a digital thread that connects all phases of the product lifecycle and its supply chain.

As you step into the booth, you're welcomed by friendly representatives who are eager to show you around and answer any questions you may have. You notice that the booth is organized into several areas, each highlighting a different aspect of SAP's product portfolio.

One of the areas is dedicated to the digital thread, and you see a large interactive display showcasing how it works. You also notice several screens on stands throughout the booth, each displaying a different SAP product or solution.

I make my way and I stop by the Design booth to have a short chat with Stefan Ziegler and Sebastian Nolting, so that everyone at home can also meet the experts at our booth. Together, we talk about the importance of sustainability in product lifecycle management and how SAP's solutions can help reduce carbon footprints. Find the video interviews in the next sections of the blog.

Sustainability and Smarter Products: Exploring PLM Trends with SAP

One of the key trends in product lifecycle management (PLM) that Sebastian discusses in the video is sustainability. He mentions that SAP, aims to make the world run better and improve people's lives by decreasing the carbon footprint of their products. He believes that building smarter products and enhancing existing products are essential steps towards creating more sustainable products. By managing the entire lifecycle of a product, companies can identify areas where they can make improvements to reduce their environmental impact.

Sebastian also mentions the importance of data management in PLM. Many companies struggle with managing vast amounts of data related to their products, from design specifications to bills of materials and procurement information. SAP enables a digital thread that allows companies to capture and manage all this data in a more organized and efficient manner. Sebastian even shows a physical "red thread" that represents the digital thread, symbolizing how the data is connected throughout the entire product lifecycle and how it can transform into a “green thread” to allow a so-called green-sustainable digital thread.

The video showcases how PLM is not just about engineering but involves various stages, including design, procurement, manufacturing, service, and decommissioning. Companies need to have a comprehensive approach to managing all the data associated with these stages to ensure that they have a complete history of their products. This can help them identify areas for improvement, streamline processes, and ultimately create more sustainable products.

In conclusion, Sebastian's video highlights the importance of sustainability and data management in PLM. By building smarter products, enhancing existing products, and managing data effectively, companies can make significant progress towards creating more sustainable products and reducing their carbon footprint. The digital thread offered by SAP is an example of how technology can enable better PLM practices, allowing companies to have a holistic view of their products' entire lifecycle.

In this video, Stefan explains that one of the highlights is the Double-Seated Valve that goes through the design-to-operate process. He explains how to configure the double-seated valve in SAP Teamcenter by Siemens, which is seamlessly integrated into their SAP portfolio. He then goes on to talk about the second pillar, which is SAP Enterprise Product Development, a native cloud solution that extend everything around product development for our customers. This solution provides great collaboration functionality, systems engineering part with requirements management in the early phase, visualization, change management, and all these topics directly as native cloud solutions provide real value for their customers. He summarizes the three building blocks that make up the SAP PLM Portfolio: SAP S/4HANA with PLM functionality, SAP Enterprise Product Development, and SAP Teamcenter by Siemens

Stefan also highlights the significance of PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) processes as a core component of business operations, and how integrating PLM functionality into the overall business processes can lead to more efficient and effective product development and design-to-operate processes.

Finally, Stefan advises new customers joining the PLM space to talk with the experts to determine which solution would fit their requirements, circumstances, and business model best. He stresses that PLM is a complex topic, and a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't work. SAP's approach is to discuss customer requirements and find the perfect solution.

Summary:

SAP Product Lifecycle Management Portfolio: The SAP PLM portfolio has three pillars: the first being PLM functionality based on SAP S/4HANA, the second being SAP Enterprise Product Development which provides native cloud solutions for product development, and the third being design with seamless integration of SAP Teamcenter by Siemens. Only SAP is in the unique position that has such a comprehensive portfolio that fits to many customer and industry types.

Digital Thread: The digital thread enabled by SAP allows companies to have a holistic view of their product's entire lifecycle, from design to end-of-life. Manage all data related to a product's design, procurement, manufacturing, service, after-sales, decommissioning, and improve the carbon footprint of products by building smarter ones.

Sustainability: With a focus on reducing the carbon footprint of products through smarter design and product lifecycle management, which is facilitated by the digital thread technology provided by SAP. Visual data analytics may be used to analyze and gain insights from this data to drive improvements in product design and sustainability. Compliance with environmental regulations and standards is also emphasized as an important aspect of sustainability in product development.
