About the Exam
SAP on AWS – Specialty
The SAP on AWS – Specialty certification is available as of April 2022 (announcement).
The certification is valid for three years (recertification).
For the latest information about the certification, visit the exam page on the AWS Certification portal
The Specialty exams are amongst the more expensive. Fortunately, AWS certification benefits include a 50% off voucher for your next exam. Consider taking Cloud Practitioner and/or Solutions Architect Associate first. Discounts are also regularly offered during events like AWS re:Invent (50% off). AWS Partners are also eligible for discount vouchers. |
As mentioned on the exam page, recommended candidates have five or more years experience working with SAP and one or more years working with SAP on AWS. It is a specialty, an add-on.
Note that these are recommendations, not requirements.
Under “working with SAP” is understood working with SAP ECC, S/4HANA, HANA, NetWeaver, etc.: SAP systems which either run on premises or the cloud. There are no questions about the SAP Business Technology Platform services or about SAP cloud applications like SAP S/4HANA Cloud, Ariba, Concur.
Those already certified as SAP BASIS or SAP HANA Admin are in great shape
- Get Certified: SAP Certified Technology Associate – System Administration with SAP NetWeaver
- Get Certified: SAP Certified Technology Associate – SAP S/4HANA System Administration
- Get Certified: SAP Certified Technology Associate – SAP HANA 2.0
In addition, you need to familiar with AWS compute, storage, and networking. For this, see
- Get Certified: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-Cxx)
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA-Cxx)
Topic Areas
Exam Page
What you need to know is covered in the exam guide
All questions are multiple choice and you need to select the correct one (or sometimes two). Often, the answers are phrased almost identical (see Sample Questions below),which makes selecting the correct answer a lot easier if you know the difference between the solutions proposed.
Like the Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure exams (but unlike SAP’s), questions and answers are verbose. It takes a while to read all the text of the 65 questions. Remaining focused could be a challenge. Make sure you are comfortable and well rested.
How to Prepare
Technical Documentation
The exam guide mentions what you need to know but does not provide any links where you can find this documented, alas. A good place to start is the documentation portal
Most relevant are
- SAP HANA – migration, setup, operations, HA
- SAP NetWeaver
In addition, study
Pay special attention to SAP Notes
- 1656250 – SAP on AWS: Support prerequisites
- 1656099 – SAP Applications on AWS: Supported DB/OS and AWS EC2 products
Additional reading is recommended
- AWS for SAP | blogs – focus on architectures
- SAP FAQ
- SAP HANA High Availability Cluster for the AWS Cloud | SUSE Docs
The many illustrations are helpful to distinguish Customer gateways from a VPN Gateway, NAT Gateway, Internet gateway; how subnets related to VPC and AZ, and so on.
SkillBuilder (AWS Partners)
For AWS Partners, you can take two SkillBuilder courses to prepare for the certification
- SAP on AWS (Business) | 2 hours
- SAP on AWS (Technical) | 4 hours
Although easier to digest than documentation, these courses are not a replacement. Most questions are sourced from the documentation and SAP Notes mentioned above. Make sure to study the docs! |
When you pass the assessment (same questions as during the course), you are rewarded with a badge. |

Over the years, for the SAP HANA Academy, SAP’s Partner Innovation Lab, and à titre personnel, I have written a little over 300 posts here for the SAP Community. Some articles only reached a few readers. Others attracted quite a few more. For your reading pleasure and convenience, here is a curated list of posts which somehow managed to pass the 10k-view mile stone and, as sign of current interest, still tickle the counters each month. |
Great blog! This really covers the topic well. This test is NOT an easy one and will take strong knowledge of both AWS and SAP. The cloud practitioner cert for AWS is likely not enough foundation to pass this test. I would advise all taking it to ensure you could walk in and take the AWS Architect test as the foundation to this exam. You will then need strong SAP knowledge, especially how SAP and AWS integrate, across both ERP and HANA stacks, and industry and AWS well-architected best practices for cloud migration and adoption.
Good luck to all on their journey here... This exam reflects strong knowledge across both disciplines, one that should be admired in the marketplace and with employers.
