In a world where large volumes of data need to be processed and managed by organizations, the SAP AI Business Services portfolio comes in handy. By applying machine learning algorithms, these AI-powered services available on SAP Business Technology Platform can (semi-)automate and optimize manual, repetitive and error-prone tasks, and therefore realize more intelligent business processes.

In this blog post, let’s focus on two of these services: Document Classification and Document Information Extraction. You will get to know how both services are becoming one in 2023, and why this is beneficial for SAP customers. (Updated)

What is Document Classification?

Document Classification is a machine learning cloud service that offers automatic and customer-specific document classification for PDF-documents. Document Classification enables companies, that manage large numbers of business documents to automatically and easily classify documents based on customer-specific classification schemas. Some common use cases are:

  • Managing the Enterprise Mail Inbox, e.g. by distinguishing invoices from delivery notes and purchase orders

  • Document Filtering, e.g. in legal departments to distinguish critical from non-critical documents.

What is Document Information Extraction?

Document Information Extraction is an ML-based service that extracts business-relevant entities such as header fields and line items from selected business documents. It is pre-trained for invoices, payment advice, purchase orders, and business cards. It also offers extension capabilities: Schema Configuration and Template Creation. The business use cases are described in more detail in this blog post.

Merging Document Classification with Document Information Extraction

As SAP continuously aims to enhance the performance of its services offered to its customers and given the fact that both services are enhancing and complementing each other perfectly, SAP has decided to combine these AI capabilities and their business focus within one common SAP AI Business Service going forward. The above explained functionality of Document Classification is planned to be available as a capability of Documents Information Extraction in 2023: take a look on the roadmap! (Updated)

The “Document Classification” service as described here is planned to be sunset and removed from the price list by the end of June 2023.

The service’s functionality will continue as it is, just not as an independent solution.
