SAP’s professional developer tools provide customers and partners with technologies, frameworks, services, data models, APIs, and integration capabilities to easily extend SAP applications.

Today, at TechEd 2022, SAP announces new innovations on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP) to provide users with the flexibility to use development environments, open-source technologies, and frameworks of their choice to enhance developer experience and support application development with SAP technology.

Let’s look at all the innovations on SAP BTP for professional developers in this blog.

Highlights Integrated Development Environment

SAP Business Application Studio offers full flexibility to developers using a simplified cloud-based development environment with an easy path from visual programming to a classic code editor. The IDE now uses Code-OSS as its new platform, the open source software used by Visual Studio Code. This change brings many improvements to developers as we now offer an enhanced and well-known user experience for SAP-oriented application development. The new Code-OSS platform for SAP Business Application Studio allows users to install any extension available via the VSX Open registry and if an extension is not available via this registry, they also have the option to install any .vsix manually.

The low-code development environment in SAP Business Application Studio is now part of the Dev Space Manager. Using our collection of low-code tools, developers can easily build full stack applications for desktop and mobile use. Many new capabilities have been added this year to the low-code development environment, such as personal data management, deployment approval process, sample data editor, guided development and more.

An integration to SAP Continuous Integration and Delivery Service (CI/CD) ensures enterprise-grade application quality out-of-the-box with pre-defined pipelines and flexibility to include additional pipeline tasks.

Additionally, the integration of SAP Business API Hub Enterprise makes it easier for developers to extend SAP applications and integrate with third party systems.

Highlights User Experience

SAP’s UI Technologies are introducing SAP Web Components, a new approach to provide enterprise-ready, SAP-supported UI components for professional developers using any Web UI framework such as Angular, React, Vue.js and SAPUI5. Developers will be able to use SAP Web Components to benefit from generic as well as SAP domain-specific UI components from many SAP solutions.

SAP Mobile Services now support new theming features from SAP Fiori to help deliver engaging user experiences. With the new releases SAP BTP SDK for iOS 9.0 and SAP BTP SDK for Android 5.1 customers have the opportunity to easily apply their corporate branding to all their mobile enterprise applications, built with the native SAP BTP Mobile SDKs. This allows companies to provide a consistent user experience to their employees and using the native SDKs, new libraries allow to easily apply changes to the themes at runtime.

New Integration for SAP Document Management Service

An integration between SAP Document Management Service and Google Workspace delivers a seamless and secure experience to SAP S/4HANA users when connecting core SAP software with Google Workspace documents.

The integration adds the ability to export and import data between SAP software, Google Docs, and Google Sheets for instant access to real-time editing and simultaneous collaboration. Users benefit from the confidence of having a clean data source due to the one-step integration, which enables version control and removes layers of potential translation when sharing application data and documents.

Highlights Development Frameworks

New feature toggles managed by SAP Cloud Application Programming Model (CAP) enable pre-built extensions for verticalizations and customizations of SaaS applications.

Further, CAP projects can now be developed on the Kyma runtime of SAP BTP. Kyma cloud native runtime — built on top of Kubernetes — provides developers with tools to effectively extend, operate, and scale cloud applications. Using CAP with Kyma, developers can be confident they are following best practices and industry standards for their enterprise applications.

Thanks to increasing popularity in the SAP Community, SAP Cloud Application Programming Model goes open source soon, giving the community the opportunity to contribute. Periphery and parts where the community could collaborate best will be open sourced first, starting with Node.js GraphQL adapter at TechEd 2022. CAP Sample Apps are already open sourced since 2019.
