One of the items that is really fun as a product manager is when you get to meet some of the customers using your product to do cool and innovative things.  One of the customers I most enjoy talking to in Ireland is Equiratings, a company who are using a combination of Analytics and Machine Learning to help participants, Olympic federations and media in the equestrian sport of 3 Day Eventing to get more insightful information enabling them to make better decisions.  Recently they went to Rome to for the FEI World Championships where they made a video describing how who they are and how they use SAP Analytics Cloud.  There is even a small cameo from the Askdata CEO Simone di Somma who joined up to talk to them about search driven analytics.  Here is the video and here is their story.

EquiRatings, the leading sports data and analytics company for equestrian sports is coming together with SAP to power equestrian sports experiences. To drive fan engagement across all media types - including equestrian’s biggest websites, podcasts, international news outlets, on-site and TV commentary teams, and mobile applications, EquiRatings will be tapping onto the power of SAP Analytics Cloud.

EquiRatings is the leading sports technology, analytics, and content business in the equestrian world. Their data and insights, coupled with their partnerships with multiple federations and teams across equestrian sport have revolutionised how these traditional Olympic sports are understood and consumed by fans.

Together with SAP, EquiRatings will use machine learning algorithms (classification and regression) to automate sophisticated predictive analysis which in turn drives multiple planning processes across the sport, from TV production to Olympic team programmes.  EquiRatings will be able to run Monte-Carlo simulations to deliver further insight to fans and managers of equestrian sports by quantifying in real-time the win and podium chances for every horse and rider in international competitions.

EquiRatings and the equestrian sport will join several beloved sports teams and clubs that SAP supports, including Bayern München, the NHL, Women’s Tennis Association, New Zealand Rugby and many more.

The story continues to evolve. Sam Watson, an Irish Olympic athlete and Chief Strategy & Co-Founder of EquiRatings describes the recent focus of predictive analytics “not being able to say what will happen, but why it will happen. Using explainable AI within Smart Predict saw EquiRatings working with multiple teams at the Tokyo Olympics to support and enhance selection process and set meaningful and measurable targets for individuals and teams”. The company are again working with multiple teams in the build-up to these FEI Eventing World Championships in Pratoni, Rome.

After over two decades, the FEI Evening World Championships will return to Rome in September 2022.  EquiRatings is an official content partner for the FEI Eventing World Championships which starts with the opening ceremony on the 14th of September. The partnership of SAP, EquiRatings and the FEI Eventing World Championships in Rome this Autumn will showcase how tradition and innovation meet, empowering the future of equestrian sport.

Speaking on the company’s own podcast channel (which receives over 1.5M downloads each year and is ranked within the top 1% of podcasts globally) managing director Diarmuid Byrne spoke of the "colour and depth to this brilliant sport that it is such a privilege for us as a team to tell the world about”
