"Be the change you wish to see in the world."- Mahatma Gandhi

SAP’s purpose is to help the world run better and improve people's lives with sustainability at the core. SAP aspires to a world with zero emissions, zero waste, and zero inequality. With SAP’s portfolio of Sustainability solutions, we want to help our customers become more sustainable. In chasing the Zero journey, our ecosystem of partners play  a key element in our strategy. SAP is committed to collaborate and co-innovate with our diverse ecosystem of partners to help businesses embed operational, experiential, and financial data and insights to drive sustainability at scale.

To bring outside-in perspectives to enhance and drive sustainability at scale, we launched our Hack2Build Sustainability initiative. Hack2Build is a short and intense format to complete a working prototype in less than 7 days. In this initiative, the partners were called to ideate and build on three key pillars of sustainability- Zero emission, Zero Waste & Zero Inequality using SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP).

We had a positive response to this call to build sustainability solutions that create business value for our customers. 16 partners joined hands with SAP across 6 countries, bringing 100+ partner consultants, architects, and business experts, to co-innovate with SAP and create their own sustainability solution differentiators. The  partners who took part in the Hack2Build are:

Accenture, Bosch Global Software Technologies, Bristlecone, Capgemini, Coac, Cognizant, Crave Infotech, EY, IBM, Infosys, Kyndryl, LTI, SDG Group, T4S Advance, TCS and Tech Mahindra

The Partners came up with many ideas to help companies embed sustainability in key areas of their business and to address carbon emission scopes 1, 2 & 3 as defined by the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. Partners were creative to leverage the best solutions and tools which SAP provides to extend and enhance, integrate and build new solutions to address the pressing needs of customers on Sustainability. Like our other Hack2Build initiatives, a dream team was formed with SAP experts across several units to enable, coach, and to provide continuous guidance to our participating partners to achieve meaningful outcomes in a week’s time.

Here, we outline the winning solutions from  demo jam held on 2 days; September 14th and September 15th where Partners showcased their innovations on Sustainability.

Demo Jam 1st day  Winners (Sept 14th)

Demo Jam 2nd day Winners (Sept 15th)

Winner: Cognizant

Procurement and Sustainability- Scope 3 Scenario Solution

Cognizant focused on aligning procurement activities with sustainability data to create a powerful strategic tool for the industry. Considering that upto 80% of a company’s footprint comes from their upstream supplier impacts, the focus was laid on upstream scope three data for this extensive what-if scenario planning. In order to better manage the supply chain, the solution considers reporting on the upstream footprint, but also improve the activities, by creating visibility for both sustainability and business drivers.

The Procurement  and sustainability solution aims to solve the above challenges by collecting data from SAP S/4HANA and external systems for scope 1-3. The solution uses SAP Data Warehouse Cloud/SAP HANA Cloud for data storage. For Scenario planning and dash-boarding purpose, SAP Analytics Cloud   was used to build the analytical reports for scope 1,2,3 with filter options.

2nd Runner-Up: Infosys

Sustainable S&OP and Carbon Footprint management powered by SAP IBP and SAP S/4HANA

Infosys solution for sustainable Sales & Operations Planning (SOP) enables carbon footprint management across supply chain and is powered by SAP Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain (SAP IBP) solution and SAP S/4HANA. The idea behind the solution is that the S&OP process conceives carbon footprint of an organization with key decisions on what/how much to produce, distribute and procure.

Greenhouse Gas (GHG) framework provides emission factors (for transport, production & energy consumption), which are uploaded into SAP IBP. GHG emission factors multiplied with the key outputs from a typical S&OP process (customer/ transport / production / external receipts) can provide the Tonnes of Emission. Global Warming Potential (GWP) of different GHG gases are also uploaded into SAP IBP to come up with total planned CO2e emissions across the complete S&OP planning horizon. Actual Order level information is integrated from SAP S/4HANA into SAP IBP to estimate actual CO2e emissions at order level.

SAP IBP dash boards (Plan Vs. Actual) & What-If Scenarios enables planners to consider emission impact in S&OP decision making.  Based on actual emissions at order level, SAP IBP Advanced Machine Learning Algorithms generates an accurate prediction for future. Finally, the estimated and actual CO2e emission at order level is integrated to SAP S/4HANA and the execution screens enhanced to show Week-to-Date / Month-To-Date /Year-To-Date enabling operations team to compare how much emissions consumed Vs. planned
