Intel recently announced that it is winding down the Intel Optane business (Intel Q2 earnings call). Both companies, SAP and Intel, remain committed to supporting Optane customers for the existing Optane Persistent Memory (PMem) product line through end-of-life. Intel product warranty terms remain unchanged, with the normal 5-year warranty upon date of sale and technical support available during the warranty period.

This includes the Intel Optane PMem 100 series (codenamed "Apache Pass") and Intel Optane PMem 200 series (codenamed "Barlow Pass"). Intel will also continue development of the Intel Optane PMem 300 series (codenamed "Crow Pass") on 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors (codenamed "Sapphire Rapids") throughout its lifetime.

Just as Intel will continue to support existing Intel Optane PMem customers through the product’s end-of-life, SAP will continue to support Intel Optane PMem with SAP HANA as currently stated in SAP Note 2618154 and summarized in SAP Note 2954515.

SAP and Intel still see a value in Intel Optane PMem as a relevant technology for SAP HANA to optimize recovery times in case of hardware failure with positive impact on Total-Cost-of-Ownership (TCO).

SAP HANA continues to support Intel Optane PMem in AppDirect Mode for production workloads and allows the usage of Memory Mode and Mixed Mode in non-production environments.

While Intel Optane PMem is winding down, SAP and Intel will continue to partner to enable the upcoming Compute Express Link (CXL) technology in close cooperation with the CXL ecosystem. SAP will stay aligned with the technology ecosystem and will provide additional updates on the strategy with CXL in the future.
