Welcome to our blog series about SAP Subscription Billing’s new features!

This week we are happy to share several features that were recently released: Enhance notification settings for subscriptions, simplified onboarding of SAP Subscription Billing and enhancements to the integration with SAP S/4HANA and SAP S/4HANA Cloud. Let’s have a look together in detail:

Enhanced notification settings for subscriptions

You can now trigger notifications based on further life cycle events of subscriptions, such as when a subscription starts, when it’s created or when it’s resumed after a pause. Previously, you could only trigger notifications based on the expiration of the subscription. What's more, you can now configure some notifications as recurring so that they're triggered periodically, for example, every 2 weeks. You can also define that notifications are skipped when a subscription is paused.

Here are just a couple of examples of how you could use the new notification types:

  • Use Product Effective notifications to trigger product shipments in replenishment scenarios (consumables as a service).

  • Use Pause notifications to notify a technical system to deactivate a service on the day that the subscription is paused.

Simplified onboarding of SAP Subscription Billing

To simplify and automate the technical setup for SAP Subscription Billing customers, we now provide "boosters" (guided interactive configurations) in the SAP BTP cockpit. You can follow the predefined steps to onboard an SAP Subscription Billing tenant in a new or existing subaccount, including mandatory and optional applications. After the initial onboarding, you can also use the booster to make changes to the setup.

Enhancements to integration with SAP S/4HANA and SAP S/4HANA Cloud

  • Creation of consumption items

Usage data associated with a bill is now transferred via the integration flow to Convergent Invoicing, resulting in the creation of consumption items in billing documents and invoices. This gives customers transparency about the consumption for which they are billed.  A consumption item is created for each usage record associated with a bill.

This feature is available as of SAP S/4HANA Cloud 2208 (Scope Item: 5IK)

  • New value derivation for billable item attributes

You can now use field derivation schemas to define attribute values that are automatically set for the billable items created in Convergent Invoicing. Previously, this information was provided by the standard integration flow. Now the integration flow only specifies which field derivation schemas should be used, and the values are then derived automatically in the billable items.

The advantage of the new configuration that it's easier to update field derivation schemas in Convergent invoicing rather than updating integration flows. Furthermore, it simplifies communication since the sending system only needs a reference to the derivation schemas rather than needing all the attribute values.

This feature is available as of SAP S/4HANA Cloud 2111 (Scope Item: 5IK) and SAP S/4HANA 2021 FPS01.
