Last week the 16th International SAP Conference for Utilities took place in Munich. After two years dominated by the pandemic and virtual meetings, it was a pleasure for me to kick off our largest industry-focused SAP conference 2022, - this time live and in-person.

Over 500 customers, partners and SAP colleagues from our Utility Community met with us to spend three days of interactive and inspiring workshops, roundtables, and discussions to exchange and most importantly network again. All in all, the event was a great success and great fun!

This year's conference focused on a topic that concerns us all:

Utilities at the Forefront of Sustainable Growth.

After an initial day full of insightful workshops, Peter Maier opened the keynotes on the second day by giving an overview of the broader topic of energy.

Afterwards, I had the honour of officially launching our new SAP Utilities Core offering, the path to the cloud with proven industry processes, increased efficiency, embedded innovations, also incl. a secure transition with a simplified price model.

In my keynote I further outlined that our SAP strategy evolves along the lines of our customers business prioritise by standardising and smoothly running commodity business processes at low costs and reduced TCO and at the same time making sure to free up resources and money to invest into new business models with the purpose of meeting customers’ needs as well as tackling some of the challenges connected to the enhanced use and production of intermitted renewable energy resources.

I closed the keynote with the words "Looking around the room I can say: YOU are in the DRIVER SEAT to make the energy transition happen!"

One of the focus topics at this year’s conference was our Industry Cloud and specifically the SAP Cloud for Energy, which is the next evolution of the metering platform already in use by several of our customers and a main component of the Smart Water Platform by Farys, Pidpa and De Watergroep. Our Technology allowed the three companies to deeply collaborate, exchange their knowledge, share resources across multiple domains as well as share costs and efforts on one platform.

Due to the heavy interest of all visitors the solution was presented at the pre-conference Smart Metering workshop, during a roundtable session and many one-to-one conversations with customers as well as in live demos on the conference floor.

One of SAP’s focus topics for utilities is Distributed Energy Resources (DER). It generated a great deal of interest during the conference, since the generation of energy with decentralised energy resources (DER Assets), such as photovoltaic cells for solar energy, wind turbines and local battery systems and their integration in the grid is becoming an increasingly important part of the energy transition to meet the increasing demand for energy. In our DER roundtable session, we discussed how utilities utilise these assets and design new programs and contribution opportunities for their consumers with our customers from all over the world. This is one of the main utilities topics of the future to make #energytransition happen!

In our vibrant exhibition, over 20 partners presented how they perfectly complement our solution portfolio in Microforum presentations and in close exchanges with our customers. It's great to have such a valuable ecosystem building and contribution to our Industry Cloud strategy by building on SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP)!

As host, we welcomed many customers at our booth, explained our utility-specific solutions first-hand and also to discussed customers experiences and challenges with all of our SAP experts.

Part of our sustainability portfolio is also SAP E–Mobility . Regardless of whether it involves four or two wheels, our exhibition gave you the opportunity to experience our solution to see why driving the transition to sustainable and convenient electric mobility can bring real benefits to you. As we believe in fun and a healthy lifestyle, we provided the opportunity to participate in an e-bike race.

Another personal highlight of this year’s IUC was our 6th Business Women’s Networking Lunch, which was attended by more women and men than ever before. It is great to see that we have a more diverse workforce joining the utilities industry!

For me inclusion and diversity play an integral role in tackling the manyfold challenges ahead. Thus, it is super important for me to embrace it in all aspects of my work and interaction with our customers! It was great to see that women and men participating in the Lunch feel the same way and share the passion for this topic.

After this year’s IUC, I am happy to say that with this event we started: strong connections, exchange & collaboration, unleashed synergies, and inspiration to jointly create new business models for generations to come. I am convinced that this energy will remain and together with our customers we won’t be stopped to make a big contribution to our #energytransition!

Why was it so successful? Quite simply, we unite diverse people from all over the world that share the same passion for utilities as we do at SAP with the goal to contribute to a better world!

Thank you to all our customers and partners and sponsors that attended our event!
